“There’s always some nagging injury, it seems like, for everybody.” The golf world saw the statement getting real in 2024. With many players getting surgeries following injuries. Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Jake Knapp, and Jon Rahm were some names who missed participating following recovery. However, the players’ participation news is always great to hear, but for some players, it is just stretching the belt before recovery.
Take the example of Viktor Hovland, who participated in the Sentry 2025 despite a fracture in the left foot’s pinky finger. He was struggling to walk and was taking painkillers to continue. Following on to the Schedule, Tony Finau was also asked about his recovery. Sharing for which he shared a shocking truth to the golf world.
Ahead of the American Express, the American professional was part of the press conference where he detailed about 2025 plans and recovery. Being a person who believes in planning ahead, the moderator asked him about his 2025 goals. Answering that, he said, “Yeah, my main goal for 2025 is to physically just be healthier than I was the last couple years. I think I’ve kind of hid it under the rug a little bit, but as some people have followed a little bit I did have some knee issues over the off-season that I had to tend to.”

Sharing further, he focused on staying healthy and strong physically, to bear good fruit on the course. After struggling for years, he underwent surgery on Oct 15, 2024, for a torn meniscus and cartilage removal from his left knee. Asking about his recovery, during the open Q&A session, he was asked, “So, are you 100 percent or are you 90 percent healthy?” A major update for Finau’s fitness was revealed by his answer.
Answering to which, he said, “Yeah, I’m not going to put a number on it. I’m not a hundred percent, but I don’t know if anybody plays at a hundred percent really ever in the world of sports. There’s always some nagging injury, it seems like, for everybody. Coming off this injury, I feel really good, I had a nice start, I feel like, at the Sentry, with how my body felt and how my game felt, and I’m looking forward to just building on that this week.”
The recovery might be a concern for him, but has been taking proper measures to increase the pace of it.

Tony Finau’s recovery after the surgery
Almost 2 months after the surgery, he was back at the course in the new calendar year. To start off, he participated in the Sentry 2025 where he finished T15. However, following his recovery process, upcoming events could be a matter of concern until he is fully recovered. While making sure that he is on the right path, he shared insights about his rehab, “the rehab’s been a lot tougher process than really anything that I’ve done with my body. I haven’t been apt to injury throughout my career, so this is kind of the first time that I’ve had to go through any type of surgery or anything like that.” Even earlier he had an issue with the right knee, but instead of getting surgery done, the golfer focused on therapy and training. That, in fact, has worked for him but not for the left knee.
However, his dedication towards his aim to be healthy can be read through his statements. He further shared about his recovery, “So the rehab process has been grueling and tough, but one that I’ve been more than willing to do, and will continue to, to make sure that I’m as healthy as I can be and physically strong as I can be as I move forward in my career.”
