American professional golfer Tiger Woods’ name is always in the news for several reasons. Any appearance by the golf star reaches the headlines in no time. Another golfer who is also always in the news is Phil Mickelson.

Lefty has been caught in controversies throughout his career. Both the players shared the headlines in the recent LIV Golf controversy. The two have also played together a few times, but have also had a rough patch in their friendship.

Phil Mickelson speaks about playing alongside Tiger Woods.

Woods and Mickelson played together in the Masters practice round at Augusta in 2018. In an interview after the session, Mickelson was interviewed where the reporter asked him how his experience was playing with the 15-time major champion. “Well, we had so much fun. I mean, he is a fun guy to be around and we had a great time today”. Mickelson said.

Mickelson partnered up with Woods and played against Fred Couples and Thomas Peters. When the reporter asked him about it, he said, “They birdied the first two holes, so they were two up, and then Tiger and I played 13 through 17… and it was over.”

The reporter also asked Mickelson about the evolution of his relationship with Woods. Replying to the question, Lefty mentioned the time when he played alongside Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup by “working together as one unit” and how it brought them closer. He said creating a common goal is what brings people together.

The two communicated almost every day while they were playing in the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. But their relationship has certainly seen the most ups and downs in comparison to any golf buddy.

The rollercoaster of Woods’ and Mickelson’s friendship

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are now longtime rivals of each other. However, there was a time when the two were good friends. Woods proved to be of great help to Mickelson when he had issues with his back. The two were partnered in the 2004 Ryder Cup, but they were beaten two times, and they have never been partnered since.

Things took a major turn when Phil Mickelson recently decided to join the LIV Golf Series. Mickelson also made some harsh comments about the PGA Tour and its commissioner. But Woods, being loyal to the tour, raised his voice in its defense and sent some unexpected statements in Mickelson’s way.

As of now, both the players are distant but at peace. Mickelson recently responded to Woods’ comments in an interview and said that he has great respect for his old friend. Only time will tell what the future holds for the relationship between the two legends.
