When it comes to unity, the sports community is quite an example. Despite rivalry or differences, they all come together for a noble cause. They show unique gestures to express their feelings. Sometimes, it’s a ribbon for breast cancer awareness, and sometimes, it is to pay tribute to Kathy Whitworth. The same happened at the Genesis Invitational 2023. Everyone saw Tiger Woods and all the golfers wearing a black ribbon. There has to be a cause, but what is it?
What is the reason behind the black ribbon gesture of Tiger Woods and others?
The golf world mourned after a DP World Tour gem John Paramor bid his last goodbye on Friday morning. The pain of the loss was too heavy, and therefore the burden was shared among golfers on Saturday. John Paramor was DP World Tour’s former chief referee, who died due to unspecified illness. His career expanded for six decades before he retired in 2020. Paramor was a skilled golfer and a former Surrey Amateur Champion. But his curiosity for the game’s rules led him to specialize as a referee. Throughout his illustrious career, we frequently spotted him on the fairways at Major Championships and European Tour events around the globe.
He spent a year working as a caddie for Peter Butler before joining the European Tour in 1976 as an administrator. The DP World Tour official later rose to the position of chief referee for the Tour in 1989. His work with the R&A and USGA played a vital role in the Rules of Golf’s evolution over time and the Tour’s regulations, including its updated Pace of Play policy in 2016.
