Jenny Shin has had a few great results in the last couple of tournaments she has played. With T12 and T14 finishes, it seemed that she was eager to reach the pinnacle once again. She won her first and only trophy about 8 years ago, and it seemed that we were about to witness her grab her second any time soon. But that changed during the first round of the 2024 Maybank Championship.
Shin teed off on the first day of the tournament. The South Korean pro also played the first set of 18 at the ongoing LPGA event in Kuala Lumpur. But even before the beginning of the second round, the fans received some upsetting news.

Jenny Shin is nowhere to be seen
Jenny Shin’s first round was filled with a mixture of emotions. She played really well during the front nine, bagging a score of -2. In fact, she was doing well in the back nine as well until the 13th round. She had scored 3 birdies and was cruising through at -3. But that’s when we started seeing her downfall.
Immediately in the next, she scored a bogey to go back to 2-under par. Things got even worse when she scored a double bogey at the 16th. And finally, we saw her put on her 6th stroke in the par 5 18th hole. That meant that she ended the first round at +1.
A while after her first-round performance at the LPGA Maybank Championship, we received news that Jenny Shin had already withdrawn from the tournament. She also left a cryptic tweet on her X account that lacked any information about her surprising exit. It raised concerns regarding her previous episodes of mental health issues. She had previously mentioned how her bad run of form had a negative impact on her mental health and she was actively trying to work on it.

Thankfully, that was not the case this time around. After about 12 hours, we finally heard from her again on her X account. This time she explained her withdrawal. Addressing her sudden disappearance, Jenny Shin said, “Had a muscle strain on the range this morning and while thinking it might not be efficient to try and play, I gave it a go and struggled to get into position at impact.” A woeful Shin also shared what she would be doing next. She said, “Will be heading to the hospital tomorrow morning for some MRI scans. Will be resting and taking these next two days to do some rehab work to try and play next week.”

It seems that Jenny Shin was suffering from physical stress. Considering how her performance dropped during the first round, fans can probably trace the exact timeline when she started feeling restricted during the first round. But the good news is that she didn’t force herself to play through the pain. She has rightfully withdrawn from the tournament to go into rehab mode so that she is ready to go for the next event.

Shin’s next appearance
The Asian leg of the LPGA is heading to Japan for the TOTO Japan Classic. The tournament is scheduled from October 31 to November 3. We hope that Jenny Shin has recovered completely by then as she is a part of the entry list. Beyond that, she has taken a break from the Lotte Championship in the Hoakalei Country Club. But we will get a chance to watch her again at The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican. She will face another star who also will have made her much-anticipated comeback from an injury, Nelly Korda.
