While achieving a win on the PGA Tour is a Herculean task in itself, winning a major championship is the true and the hardest test for a golfer. However, for seasoned players like Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka, who are two of the best golfers in the world, it’s not that hard.
And doing an analysis of how these players have been faring when it comes to the Majors is their coach Pete Cowen. Having worked with Rory in the past, Cowen puts in comparison his major performance with that of Koepka.

Pete Cowen is by far the world’s most successful golf coach, with over 250 main PGA Tour victories and eight majors. In 1997, he left professional golf to become a full-time Tour coach, and since then has tutored many top golfers in the world. His clientele includes the creme de la creme of the golf world like Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio García, Henrik Stenson, Gary Woodland, Brooks Koepka, and others.
Right now, Cowen is the teaching coach of Koepka. Recently, he gave a special interview to Essentially Sports Fancast where he shared his experience about working with the world’s best. When the interviewer Noah Lack asked him if Tiger Woods had a 10-year difference between the 14th and 15th Majors, and is he sees a similar path for McIlroy, here’s what the coach said.
“He is one of the best players in the world and whenever the majors come. Brooks has won 5 majors in the last six years and nobody has gone anywhere near that. So all of a sudden Rory has got major winners. It would be nice to see them go head to head, Rory and Brooks at some stage in one of the majors,” said Cowen.
Speaking about Koepka, he further added, “The problem is now with Brooks being a LIV Player he has got 5 years exemption because of his win at US… last year in all majors.” Cowen’s good work on Koepka reflects in the golfer’s performance.

In 2021, Rory and Pete worked together for eight months, after which they mutually parted ways. The Irishman went back to his longtime coach, Michael Bannon. Later McIlroy said, “I’ve always had a relationship with Pete and I’ll ask for his input if I feel I need it.” Rory enjoyed his last major victory at the PGA Championship in 2014.
