Rickie Fowler is currently on one of the hottest streaks in his life! Despite having recently not won an event, the golf pro has certainly set fire to every course that he’s stepped foot on recently. This week, at the WGC-Dell Tech Match Play, too, his performance was nothing short of brilliant. With that masterclass performance, also came some hilarious and intriguing trash talk for his opponents. And just hours ago, the golf pro got candid about the reason behind that banter!

Fowler’s brutality takes down his opponent

On Friday this week, Fowler, unfortunately, saw his journey at the Match Play end early. But despite that abrupt and bitter loss of the war, the 5-time PGA Tour winner won a few battles. His last notable victory came against Keith Mitchell on the third day of the event this week. Not only did he go on to win the face-off against him, but at the 16th hole, Fowler also took him down with his brutal trash talk.

Fowler holed a beautiful eagle at the 16th hole to take a 2-up lead over Mitchell. Following the magnificent shot, Fowler had more entertainment for his fans as he headed over to rub the win in the one-time PGA Tour winner’s face. Picking up Mitchell’s marker along with his own ball after winning the hole, the golf pro handed over the marker to his opponent, calling him a “loser.”

But gloating wasn’t the humble golfer’s normal style, which left many confused. Clarity came when the PGA Tour star explained himself on Instagram when the PGA Tour posted a video of Fowler’s eagle and wrote, “A little trash talk from @RickieFowler after this eagle.” The golf pro explained that it was just hilarious banter because Mitchell “wasn’t happy” about his putt.

Fowler claimed that his long putt left Mitchell quite unhappy, for which he hilariously made the winner pick up his marker. “Actually @k_m_mitchell made me pick up his mark because he wasn’t happy that I made my putt haha,” he wrote in a comment on the Tour’s post about his trash talk.

He explained that his words were just his own comeback to Mitchell for making him pick up his marker. Mitchell, of course, made him pick up his marker for doubling his lead with the splendid shot. In some strange way perhaps, they were justified in what they did. So, while it may have sounded harsh to them, it was just another day at work!
