Apart from the loud Aussie fans, LIV Golf Adelaide also displayed some of the best golf over the weekend. However, one golfer who stood out from the rest was Talor Gooch, who won his maiden LIV event. Despite being at the top of the leaderboard in Australia, Gooch has suffered a disappointing update that even stunned many golf fans.
With a win at The Grange, Talor Gooch secured his first pro win since the 2021 RSM Classic. While his win at the PGA Tour also came with a load of OWGR points, that isn’t the same case with his latest triumph at LIV Golf.

Though many golfers moved to LIV Golf for its high-end prize money, the League has yet to receive a green light to earn the OWGR points for its golfers. Since the lucrative Tour is Invitational, has smaller field sizes, and is a 54-hole event with no cut-line policy, it doesn’t fall into the ranking criteria.
Talor Gooch won the biggest golf event in the world this week and dropped two places in the ‘official’ golf rankings to 59th.

While commissioner Greg Norman has voiced support for his golfers, LIV Golf has yet to receive any positive update from the Official World Golf Ranking body. Talor Gooch, who won the LIV event in Adelaide with a stunning 19 under par, dropped down two places in the latest rankings released on 23rd April. Previously, Gooch held the 57th position, but in the latest update, he dropped to the 59th ranking.

Talor scored -10 in two consecutive rounds to secure his $4 million win. But despite putting on an elite display of golf, OWGR punished the Oklahoma-based golfer for his move to LIV Golf. Nonetheless, the latest ranking list caught the attention of the golf world as fans had a wide range of reactions. While some sided with Talor, others chose to verbally attack LIV Golf.
Golf world shares their thoughts on LIV Golf vs OWGR
Since LIV Golf doesn’t fall into the OWGR criteria, many fans aimed at the Saudi-funded Tour as an exhibition league. One fan even claimed that Gooch ‘sold out’ to the lucrative Tour.

Because he’s playing an exhibition. Small field, only 3 days of play and must have been one easy course for him to shoot 62, 62.

While many criticized LIV Golf, some fans even showed their support for the breakaway Tour. Though most questioned the relevance of the OWGR points system in the world of golf, one fan labeled the PGA Tour as ‘boring’ and ‘slow’.
At an event where 3 of the top 5 finishers from the first Major played. The golf rankings have lost all validity.

The fight for OWGR points has been an ongoing battle for LIV Golf since its initiation. As the Breakaway Tour looks to further win the hearts of the golf world, its quest for the ranking system is only getting stronger. But with the lucrative Tour failing to reach the criteria, only a change in the rules is imminent for earning the ranking points.
