Leading your national team in the Ryder Cup is a dream of many golfers. Ben Hogan, who is widely considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, had the privilege of leading Team USA in the Ryder Cup four times in his career. While captaining for the final time in 1967, Ben Hogan had an inspirational speech for his team. 55 years later, fans on Twitter react to the iconic speech.
Hogan led the American team twice as playing captain and the other two times as non-playing captain. However, he managed to win in all of those appearances. Driven by his obsession to excel, the 9 time Major winner had a no-nonsense attitude. In 1967, ahead of the Ryder Cup, Hogan summoned his team with an iconic speech.
The iconic 1967 Ryder Cup Ben Hogan speech
Having won the previous two Ryder Cups as a captain, Hogan was well aware of all the responsibilities that come with leadership before heading to the 1967 Ryder Cup. However, the last time the Hawk had led the American team was back in 1949. Nonetheless, the 18-year gap wasn’t an issue for Ben Hogan as he proceeded to deliver an unfiltered iconic speech to his compatriots.

Hogan started by saying, “Boys, there’s nothing to being the captain of the Ryder Cup. You guys are all great players. Pairing is really easy. I’m going to pair together you boys who drive crooked, and I’m going to pair together you boys who drive straight. And the first ball’s going to be hit by Julius Boros “cause he don’t give a shit about anything. So y’all just go play your game”.
The Hall of Famer then proceeds to talk about how important it is for golfers to be comfortable in what they wear while playing golf. He gave his team an option to not wear the uniform if they don’t wish to do so.

Ben Hogan said, “You got these uniforms here. If you don’t like the way they fit or whatnot, don’t wear them. I never could play in somebody else’s clothes. Doug Sanders, if you want to come out here and dress like a peacock, that’s fine. Whatever you want”.
In the end, the ruthless winning spirit of Hogan unleashes in his speech, as he demands a win from his team. He ends by saying, “But let me tell you boys one thing – I don’t want my name on that trophy as a losing captain”. Following an iconic speech, Team USA was motivated enough to go on and dominate Team Europe by 23.5 – 8.5 points.
Despite the speech being told nearly 55 years ago, fans haven’t still forgotten about it. Fans on Twitter reminisce about the iconic speech while remembering the legacy of Ben Hogan.

Bruh, if Hogan saw this current team, he'd flip, especially at Reed. But at least all of the other guys are nice guys except for Bubba.

There really couldn’t be more of a man that I admire from every perspective than Ben Hogan.

Nice. Enough pouting and whining about this and that, who you're playing with or against. The golf ball is struck by one player at a time. Go hit it, than hit it again! #thatsgolf

Hogan seems to be “whatever you need to do to win”. Today’s captain emphasizes camaraderie over success. Make nobody sad. Like youth sports. Pro golf’s version of “everyone gets a trophy”. Jack’s concession to Phil’s criticism…a PC paradigm shift of teams, winning and captains.
