Every elite golf fan remembers the most iconic moment of the Presidents Cup during the 2007 edition. Don’t know what we are talking about? Woody Austin’s infamous moment at the 2007 Presidents Cup still brings laughter to golf fans worldwide, and for good reason. The incident at Royal Montreal Golf Club’s 14th hole witnessed Austin trying to hit his ball, which was submerged in a greenside pond and, well, it exactly ended how you think it would’ve. The golfer lost his balance and fell face-first into the water.
This priceless blooper has become iconic in Presidents Cup history. One would think the golfer backed off after his well-known fall into the water. But no. Austin took the defeat as a chance to show his sense of humor by wearing scuba goggles on the next tee. That was precisely when the ‘Aquaman’ was born. However, despite being a newcomer to the Presidents Cup at 43, Austin played well and earned 2.5 points, which helped Team USA secure the trophy.
Recently, Johnson Wagner recreated the same moment at the 2024 Presidents Cup at the same venue. So, how did the original creator of the ‘Aquaman moment’ react to this? Well, let’s say, he found it amusing. In the latest post by SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, an audio clip of a conversation between Wagner and Austin was posted, and the fans got to hear what Austin thought about Wagner’s stunt. “He cheated, though he had both feet in the water. The ball was not submerged in the water. He cheated,” said Austin, taking a lighthearted jab at Wagner.

In his defense, Wagner also replied that he couldn’t get the ball out without going in the water. “It’s not that I cheated. There was no way to get that ball out of the water, Woody,” said the golfer. But did you know Jack Nicklaus’s wife also had a hand in creating the iconic moment?

Barbara Nicklaus, wife of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, played a pivotal role in one of golf’s most comical moments. Nicklaus was a captain at the 2007 Presidents Cup, so his wife was present at the venue to show her support for the team. To everyone’s surprise, she took part in the game in a way no one could’ve imagined. Woody Austin’s famous fall into the water at the 2007 Presidents Cup was followed by a funny moment when he wore scuba goggles on the next tee. But who came up with the ‘goggles’ idea? Well, it was none other than Barbara Nicklaus.
“The goggles weren’t my idea. That was a little collaboration between Barbara Nicklaus and my caddie, Brent Henley. He pulled them out of the bag on the tee, and said, ‘We think it would be really cool if you wore these,” said the golfer per Golf Digest.
