Phil Mickelson is one of the best golfers of all time, with more than 50 championship victories worldwide. While he is famous for his golfing, the 52-year-old is known more for his easy-to-approach behavior, which helped him earn the title ‘one of the most approachable golfers.’ However, did you know that one of his fellow golfers has been hating him for a long time? 

“So, played with Phil today,” the Australian professional golfer Lucas Herbert said. “Had an enjoyable day watching him play.” He further added, “Have a little back story with Phil.”

The PGA Tour pro-golfer and the veteran have been grouped in the second round of the Open Championship. And the Aussie shared why and when he started hating the 6-time major winner through an Instagram video. 

Phil Mickelson broke a fan’s heart!

According to Herbert, he volunteered and carried board at the Royal Melbourne in 2011 for the Presidents Cup, of which Mickelson was a part.

As a fan of the sport, the then 15-year-old was excited to get the autographs of his favorite golfers on his hat. However, according to Herbert, Mickelson crushed that dream. Herbert said, “I asked Phil for an autograph, and he was the only one to deny me of this autograph.”

Interestingly, the 26-year-old didn’t hold back from telling the story to the 1-time Open champion. “On the 15th tee, I reminded him that I hate him,” Herbert explained how he told Lefty the story. “And have hated him for 11 years as a result of him not signing the autograph for me.” 

How did Lefty respond to Herbert’s hate story? 

“No, absolutely not. I’m with Amy. Go Away,” The American golfer had said in 2011 to the young Aussie. However, according to Herbert, Mickelson was apologetic to him after he heard the story.

“Lucas, 11 years late,” Mickelson wrote on his glove and gave it to the young professional golfer after their round ended. The 1-time PGA Tour winner stated that he would frame the glove as one of his prized possessions. 

Notably, Phil Mickelson couldn’t make the cut and got eliminated from the 150th Open Championship after scoring 72 ad 77 in the first two rounds. Herbert, on the other hand, advanced to the final rounds. He scored 70-68-73 from the first three rounds and is ranked at T24 after Day 3.
