Does Max Homa really deserve his Presidents Cup spot after flopping in major tournaments?

The 2024 Presidents Cup is set to make its comeback to The Royal Montreal Golf Club from September 24-29, 2024. Both captains, Jim Furyk and Mike Weir, have announced the spots to be filled by the captain’s picks. For Team USA, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, Brian Harman, and Tony Finau were chosen to complete the Team USA.

A lot of Furyk’s decisions made no sense to the golf community, whether it was not selecting Justin Thomas, who has had a great record at the Presidents Cup, or opting for Max Homa, who has not been in top form for almost six seasons now. However, whenever addressing these concerns, the USA Team captain seems to be pretty clear about why he made these choices.

The Tee Times Pub recently took to their official X account and shared Max Homa’s record in the Majors since 2019. He appeared only at the PGA Championship that year and dropped down to a T64 finish. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were the worst for him in the Majors, missing cuts in all three of the first Majors in both years, back-to-back. He managed a T40 at the Open Championship. In 2022, the 33-year-old secured a T13 at the PGA Championship but dropped below the top 45 at the Masters and the US Open.

He also missed the cut at Royal Troon. In 2023, he had his best finish with a T10 at the Open Championship, following a T43 at the Masters, a T55 at the PGA Championship, and a missed cut at the Open. When asked about choosing Max Homa for the team, Furyk defended his choice, stating, “Max plays his best on the biggest stages.”

Well, this season has indeed been a better run in the Majors for the American professional. Nonetheless, the golf world deems him unsuitable to be playing in the Presidents Cup.

The golf community dubs Max Homa ‘overrated’

What’s your perspective on:

Does Max Homa really deserve his Presidents Cup spot after flopping in major tournaments?

Have an interesting take?

Max Homa has had his best run in the Majors so far this season. But what exactly are the statistics? Only one top-5 finish (a T3 at the Masters). He had disappointing T35 and T43 finishes at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship, respectively. And, of course, not to forget a missed cut at the US Open. Does that account for a great Major run?

The golf community does not think so. One person, mocking his performance, wrote, “His best major season and yet just one top 30 😂😂🤣”. Another simply commented, “His play in the majors would not support this”.

While Homa might always be armed with his witty words, according to the golf community, his comeback with the clubs and bombs has not been so efficient. At the BMW Championship, he was teamed up with Si Woo Kim, who was spotted checking his phone during the round.

A fan used the opportunity to call the American professional an unserious player on the Tour. While Homa had a comeback to the post, he finished 46th in the FedEx Cup standings, unable to make it to the Tour Championship. In response, one person wrote, “He overrated everyone knows this.”

For Homa, it is not just the Masters—his overall performance has also dipped over the years. In 2024, he appeared in 20 tournaments, among which he only secured three top-10 positions. He also missed three cuts. This, again, is not a great run for a player who will be appearing in the 2024 Presidents Cup. One of his fans, utterly disheartened, wrote, “I love Max but he hasn’t done s**t this season.”

Currently ranked 22nd on the OWGR list, Max Homa has only six PGA Tour victories. He made only one appearance at the Presidents Cup, back in 2022, where he qualified through the captain’s pick. He holds a disappointing record of 4-0-0. Reflecting on this, one person mocked him, saying, “Might be worth showing his combined Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup record.”
