The ongoing Farmers Insurance Open has been in the news for the surprising amount of golfers withdrawing from the event. Even though 12 golfers withdrew themselves from the event, something even more surprising caught the fans’s attention. Unlike the news, the fans observed the performance of the American professional, Max Homa, after the first round and connected it to an analyst’s prediction of his performance.
Before starting the 2025 schedule, Homa announced his new partnership with Cobra Puma Golf after parting ways with decade-old partner Titleist. The news of his new partnership was a shocking one. Fans were expecting him to stay with the brand due to his constant performance. Even though he was unable to win any tournament in 2024, the American professional recorded some great finishes, including 3 top 20s, 2 top 10s, and 1 top 5 finish. But we can’t overlook his 9 career wins and his continued brand partnerships.
After the brand switch, during the No Laying Up Podcast, Kevin Van Valkenburg also shared the history of players who made the brand switch and how it affected their careers. He said, “History has not been super kind to people who have made switches like this.” Sharing some of the golfer’s names, he pointed out Payne Stewart, Lee Janzen, and Nick Price, who witnessed career downfall after the brand switch.

However, now with the current performance of the 34-year-old at the Farmers Insurance Open. It seems to have become an enormous concern for him as well. Homa played many par shots in the first round, along with two bogeys, one double bogey, and one triple bogey. However, he recorded an eagle putt at hole 6 and that was the best putt in the first round of the event.

The 2023 Farmers Insurance Open winner has 9 career wins, including 6 on the PGA Tour. He would have never expected a backlash from fans. However, the concerning performance of the golfer is linked with the recent brand switch. For which fans have shared their thoughts on the post.
One fan wrote, “Switching to cobra is a career killer,” and another wrote, “Going from titliest to cobra is something.” The fans are observing the golfer’s performance after the switch as at the Sentry he finished at T26. The switch is also shocking as Titleist is one of the favorite brands of golfers. Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, and other professionals use Titleist. For Homa to make this switch comes out as an oddity in the eyes of fans.
More netizens joined in with the history-backed comment, “Equipment is everything. Can’t play titleist for almost a decade, switch manufactures and expect the same results. Happened to Rory, Ricky Fowler, now max” As the critics have shared during the podcast, fans have also pulled out some names from history whose career was affected by the brand switch.

Well, getting used to the new equipment will take some time. The possibility of this can be witnessed in the coming rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open.
