Back in November, LIV Golf made waves with an exciting announcement: the league would be making its debut in South Korea in 2025, bringing an event to the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea. This would be the same venue that hosted the DP World Tour’s Genesis Championship just weeks ago. At the time, LIV Golf was still under the leadership of Greg Norman, who had been steering the league toward new horizons. However, as of now, things have shifted.

With Norman stepping down as CEO, LIV Golf is heading into this new chapter with fresh leadership. Still, the upcoming South Korea event remains a significant milestone for the league, continuing its expansion across Asia. But that is not all for the Saudi-backed league. It has stayed true to its motive – Golf but louder, and that will be continued even under the current CEO Scott O’Neil.

As LIV Golf gears up for the 2025 season, Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant believes that the league’s players have found fresh motivation with a new opportunity: a qualification path into The Open Championship. Since its dramatic debut at Centurion Club in 2022, LIV Golf has steadily gained momentum, and Thant has been there through it all. While many top players initially turned their backs on LIV, the Asian Tour made the bold decision to partner with the Saudi-backed league.

This partnership has been a win-win, with LIV players gaining the chance to earn crucial Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points while also competing in tournaments across the globe. For a while, LIV’s lack of OWGR recognition created a significant challenge, but things are starting to turn around. Now, in a groundbreaking move, the R&A has offered LIV Golf a qualification spot for the 2025 Open Championship, following in the footsteps of the USGA’s US Open exemption.

While only one spot will be up for grabs—awarded to the highest-ranked player not already exempt from LIV’s standings after LIV Dallas on June 29—it’s a major step forward for the league. For Thant and everyone involved in LIV Golf, this is a clear sign that progress is being made. And of course, there will be expansion globally.  “In the short term,m there will not be a lot of change. I know LIV has plans to be around for the foreseeable future, they are looking at expansion, new ways to get golf to multiple places in the world,” he said.

Well, why would he not think that way? LIV has indeed been outperforming itself when it comes to making golf a global game.

LIV Golf makes its debut in India

LIV Golf made its debut in India this year through the Asian Tour’s International Series. The event featured big names like Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann, and others at the DLF Golf & Country Club, and it was indeed a rather exciting watch. Ollie Schniederjans pulled off an incredible comeback to secure victory at the International Series India presented by DLF, stunning the crowd at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram, just outside Delhi. The American golfer, fueled by a stunning chip-in birdie on the 13th hole, shot a three-under-par 69 in the final round, finishing with an impressive 10-under for the tournament.

His performance earned him a surprise four-shot win over the defending US Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, who was his closest competitor. DeChambeau brought his A-game, firing a seven-under-par 65, but despite his best efforts, he couldn’t overcome the eight-shot lead Schniederjans had built up heading into the final round. In the end, DeChambeau finished at six under for the week, falling short of the remarkable comeback victory by Schniederjans. What are your thoughts on how the league is expanding?
