Has LIV Golf given David Feherty the platform he always deserved?

When LIV Golf came out of thin air and took with it many PGA Tour pros like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and others, it didn’t stop there. Greg Norman has the vision to make a global league and for it, he needed commentators, analysts, and more. For the latter, he contacted the man who has been a caddie, a golfer and had worked with the Golf Channel, CBS, and NBC. Who could’ve been better than him?

Norman contacted the 5-time DP World Tour winner, David Feherty. And in an instant, the 66-year-old said yes. The decision was not hard for Feherty to make as he saw two reasons why he decided without thinking too much about it. When asked about it at the Fairway to Heaven podcast, Feherty truthfully admitted, “There was obviously the money side of it, it was terrific.” However, the biggest reason was that he needed to fulfill his dream.

Despite being in the golf media world since 1997, Feherty was never given a chance to be a golf analyst. So when Norman offered such a position for LIV Golf, Feherty couldn’t deny it. He expressed, “This was something that I’d never done. I’ve never had the chance to be a lead analyst.” And as it turned out, it was one the best decisions he ever took for his career. The former PGA Tour pro gleefully shared that it has been the most fun he has had in the 30 years he spent in the broadcast industry.

Certainly, while completing his dream of having a global tour, Norman also helped many like Feherty to achieve their dreams. And that was not the only reason that pushed Feherty to accept the five-year deal with LIV Golf.

What’s your perspective on:

Has LIV Golf given David Feherty the platform he always deserved?

Have an interesting take?

Another reason why Greg Norman got an instant yes

David Feherty has already spent three years on LIV Golf and in another two his contract will come to an end. The man who recruited him, Greg Norman will not be the CEO of LIV Golf from August 2025 as his contract would end too. But Feherty wants to continue at LIV Golf beyond that. He has more fun analyzing the LIV Golf events than he did at any tour.

The reason is Feherty always felt that when he was working at NBC he couldn’t show his full potential. When he last broadcast at NBC at the 2022 Open Championship as Cameron Smith won, he felt, “At Cameron Smith’s Open, I barely made the air on that. I was in one of the towers. It didn’t feel frustrating at the time. It’s only in retrospect that I look at it and feel like I should have done more there.”

Additionally, the Northern Irishman knew that his strength was observing the golfers’ body language but as he could never be a lead analyst at any broadcasting channel, he couldn’t use that either. He added, “That’s an advantage we have here at LIV. We seem to get a lot more body language.” With all things added, it made sense to Feherty that he should be a part of LIV Golf for many years to come and share his expertise like he could never do before.
