The world of professional golf has been embroiled in a tumultuous landscape of controversy and power struggles, sparking widespread speculation about the sport’s future as traditional tours and the breakaway LIV Golf series engage in a bitter battle for supremacy. In a revealing interview on The Smylie Show, Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig delved into the inner workings of LIV Golf, shedding light on the challenges it faces.
Harig’s conversation with Greg Norman, the commissioner of LIV Golf, touched on the lack of a TV deal and roadblocks to sponsorship, highlighting the significant hurdles LIV Golf must overcome to achieve long-term success. “We haven’t been able to get a TV deal, and we’ve had roadblocks to sponsorship,” Norman admitted to Harig. Despite securing a multiyear deal with CW Network, LIV Golf has struggled to replicate this success, failing to land any other major broadcast deals in the US. The partnership with CW, which made it the exclusive US broadcast partner for the Saudi-funded tour, was seen as a significant win for LIV. However, since then, the tour has been unable to capitalize on this momentum, with no other major networks stepping up to partner with them.
This lack of progress has raised questions about the long-term viability of LIV Golf, particularly in the face of ongoing criticism and legal challenges from the PGA Tour. As the golfing world grapples with the implications of LIV Golf’s rise, Norman’s acknowledgment that his contract is up in 2025 has fueled speculation about his future as commissioner.

However, not having a TV deal or big sponsors was not the biggest issue. It was not having a conversation with other parties; “One of the biggest regrets is if they would have just had a conversation,” said Greg Norman to Harig. Harid then continued, “But I still go back to when we didn’t know what this was going to be. What would that conversation have been, and what would you have expected them to do? Would you expect, like, yeah, right, these guys can go play?”
Harig also reflected on the evolution of professional golf and was reminded of the significant changes that have taken place over the past thirty years. Back then, there was no home tour rule like the one that currently applies to Rory McIlroy. Today, McIlroy can play in limited DP World Tour events in Europe and still needs to obtain releases to compete in the Middle East, but he has the freedom to play in any DP World Tour event he wants, at any time, in Europe – as long as he meets the requirement of playing 15 events in the US. “You know, back thirty years ago they didn’t have a home tour rule like they do now for Rory. So Rory can play in unlimited DP World Tour in Europe”, he said.
Bob Harig’s latest article for Sports Illustrated reveals that the DP World Tour and LIV Golf are engaged in talks about a potential deal that would allow LIV Golf players to join the DP World Tour, a move that could significantly impact the future of professional golf.

As the clock ticks, the pressure mounts. McIlroy warns that if a deal isn’t struck soon, the PIF will likely explore alternative options. “That’s probably the next step,” he cautioned. The DP World Tour has already rejected one LIV Golf offer, but the door remains open for further discussion. As the golf world holds its breath, one thing is certain: the future of golf is on the cusp of a major transformation. Will a deal be struck, or will the PIF forge a new path? The answer will shape the course of golf history.
