A breath of fresh air has swept through the corridors of LIV Golf, and Carlos Ortiz is loving every minute of it! The Mexican pro recently shared his enthusiasm for the new leadership, specifically Scott O’Neil, who took the reins just two weeks ago. Ortiz said that Scott is doing a great job and that the players are already noticing a positive change. He shared his thoughts while competing in the LIV Golf International Series in India.
Carlos Ortiz was asked about LIV Golf’s efforts to change the OWGR points system, and he didn’t mince words. “And honestly, I don’t think there’s any point for us to reach for those,” he said. Ortiz believes that LIV Golf players are already top-notch competitors, on par with European Tour players. He thinks that they’re already getting the recognition they deserve and that PGA Tour rankings are the only thing left to consider. “So it’s just PGA tour ranking and I think we just have to now find a way that people recognize that we have some of the best players in the world and we’re playing more internationally like coming here”, he said.
Ortiz emphasized that what’s really important is getting recognition for LIV Golf players, who are traveling the world and showing off their skills on different courses. “I mean we love coming to this place and meeting new crowds meeting new golf courses and I think we should get recognized for that”, he said. When asked if LIV Golf would pursue world ranking points, Ortiz was skeptical. He doesn’t think it’s worth it, and his guess is that LIV Golf won’t be going after world ranking points. “I honestly don’t know the answer but my guess is that we’re not gonna go for world ranking.”

Well, it seems that O’Niel shares the same sentiments about the OWGR points, but will that be enough to convince every LIV golfer?

The new LIV Golf CEO thinks Legaue’s time for, “the world rankings has passed”
LIV Golf’s new CEO, Scott O’Neil, has his work cut out for him. One of the biggest hurdles is the issue of world ranking points, which has been a thorn in LIV’s side since its inception. O’Neil has already hinted that he won’t be reversing the decision to withdraw LIV’s proposal from the OWGR table, saying “Our time with the world rankings has passed”. Instead, he’ll need to focus on securing a direct pathway for LIV golfers to compete in majors, which USGA CEO Mike Wahn has said he can “envision” but hasn’t committed to yet. On top of that, O’Neil will need to iron out the remaining differences between the PGA Tour board and PIF, LIV Golf’s financial backer.
However, while O’Neil may be ready to move on from the OWGR, LIV Golf players are still feeling frustrated and unfairly treated. Jon Rahm recently expressed his disappointment that LIV players still aren’t receiving World Ranking points, despite being a year into the league. Rahm revealed that he was initially told that LIV wouldn’t pursue discussions with the World Ranking system, but he believes it’s wrong to deny LIV players the credibility they deserve. “I think it’s not fair for anybody in that sense,” Rahm said, emphasizing that LIV players should have a way to qualify for major championships without relying on invites. “And the World Ranking points, need to figure something out,” he added. It seems that O’Neil’s statement that “our time with the world rankings has passed” may not be shared by all LIV Golf players, who feel that promises were made to them that have not been kept. Let us know in the comment section below what you think about the current state of LIV Golf and World Ranking points!
