Is the Greenbrier at risk? The Greenbrier’s status as a premier golf venue is facing uncertainty. Once home to the PGA Tour’s A Military Tribute, the course lost the event in 2020 due to undisclosed property breaches. While it hosted the Solheim Cup in 1994 and a LIV Golf event last year, the course’s future on the professional golf circuit remains unclear.

As LIV Golf has already announced returning to the Old White Course from August 16 to August 18, this might be the last year. But why the early shutdown of the $25 million events at the 7286-yard-long course? Well, the property owned by Governor Jim Justice is set to go to public auction on Aug. 27 because of a default.

As per Charleston, W.Va. (AP), “West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican candidate for US Senate, is fighting to keep his iconic Greenbrier hotel.” On Wednesday, the West Virginia Daily News announced the public auction, leaving Greg Norman’s massive plans for the league in disarray.

Justice bought it back in 2009, saving it from bankruptcy, but it looks like the fate of the property is unfortunate, as history has indeed repeated itself. As per the news, there is a legal notice announcing the public auction near White Sulphur Springs due to unpaid debts.

This is currently known to be only a meager portion of the financial woes of the Justice family. Ryan Ballengee, the Golf News Net journalist, took to his official X account and shared the news, writing, “Just in time for LIV Golf Greenbrier! (I’m a big fan of the resort.)”. 

This will completely dismantle the 2025 schedule for the league as well. Compared to the PGA Tour, which not only has the added benefits of the OWGR points but also has three times the number of events LIV Golf does.

Twelve regular events and two season-ending championships across 14 venues form the league’s annual itinerary. Which means almost having only one event every year. But it looks like 2025 will no longer have LIV Golf Greenbrier on the breakaway league’s event calendar.

But this year, LIV Golf has gone above and beyond with its venues. So even if the venue were to change, who knows, the White Shark might come out with something better. Just like the LIV Golf event calendar this year.

LIV Golf made three new venue debuts in 2024

The LIV Golf this year has brought the players to several new venues, which has amplified the excitement level of the game. In February, LIV Golf had its first US tournament at the Las Vegas Country Club, where Dustin Johnson lifted the trophy, breaking out of a six-way tie.

In March, LIV Golf had its first event in Saudi Arabia, ahead of the Hong Kong Open. It hosted the Jeddah at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, where Joaquin Niemann took home a whopping $4 million. Two months ago, LIV Golf had its first event in the city of Texas with the electrifying LIV Golf Houston at the Golf Club of Houston, where Carlos Ortiz defeated Adrain Meronk by one stroke. But it was a fun ride at the new venues nonetheless.

It looks like 2025 will also witness new venues, making it all the more exciting for the LIV Golfers.
