Greg Norman’s Father Once Had an Epic 4-Word Reaction Towards His Son’s ‘Crazy’ Love for Golf

It has been a long time since golf legend Greg Norman stopped playing professional golf. But that hasn’t stopped him from staying associated with the sport. Norman currently heads one of the biggest and most popular golf tours, the LIV Golf league.

But before he stepped in as an entrepreneur to work with golf professionals, Norman himself was a tour pro. And he was famous for his spectacular gameplay and unmatchable records. However, unlike many other famous players, Norman didn’t have his father’s support for his career in the sport.

Greg Norman recalled his father’s reaction upon discovering his golfing talent

During a 2021 interview on the Four Courses podcast with Geoffrey Zakarian, Norman recalled his father’s reaction toward his love for golf. “My dad never thought I’d be the golfer I became,” he said. “He wanted me to be either in his engineering business or be a scholar or go on and do something else in the business world.”

Unaware of his true potential in the sport, Norman’s father wanted him to settle for a 9-5 job. But little did he know that his son was soon going to be super successful in the field of golf. Norman recalled having a conversation with his father about his dream to play pro golf. Here’s how it went:

“When I told him — hey, I’m going to turn professional…and in three years’ time, I’m going to play the tour. He’s looking at me like, ‘Are you crazy, you’re not good enough to do that, nobody in our family has been a professional sportsman or woman’.”

Well, his concern was a tad bit right as it always helps to have a sportsman in the family. However, having an athlete’s blood running in the family is not a necessity to be a successful sportsman. Being a successful athlete requires special talent and extremely hard work.

 Greg Norman, who was one of the best of his time, was nowhere short of talent. While his father never believed that Norman was meant to play professional golf, there was very little he could do to stop the legend. And evidently, he left his old man in disbelief with his passion and talent for the sport.
