According to Spieth, if one wants their child to fall in love with golf, they need to allow the opportunity for the same. You cannot control the environment of situations. Therefore, you should always let the kids decide if they want to pursue golf or not. Because Shawn, Spieth’s father, followed the same thing for the pro golfer. Shawn never pushed his son to play golf. Because if he had been forced, he would not have loved the sport as he does now. And today, Spieth is ready to walk his father’s parenting path.

Spieth explained the importance of liberty to choose, “I was never pushed to do anything. If I was forced into it, I wouldn’t have loved it the way I do. You have to fall in love with the work on your own because it’s not always gonna be easy.” When Tiger Woods took the first golf shot of his life, he was a mere kid, and the late Earl Woods never forced him. The legendary golfer chose to play golf. In a similar way, LIV defector Phil Mickelson was also a kid when he started playing golf, and he was not forced into the game either.

How did Spieth learn to play golf?

Setting goals is fundamental before walking the path to achieving the goal. Spieth explained his journey: “When I got serious about it, my dad would tell me to go write down my goals. He’d say, ‘What are your goals? OK, If those are your goals, I’m willing to support you through it, but you’ve gotta stay committed to these then, and that’s your choice.'”

Shawn asked his son to write down his goals, and he will support him till the end. However, the only condition was that he had to be dedicated and consistent. Mere support would not help. And that consistency could only come because Spieth chose golf and loved to play it.
