The PGA Tour announced that Camilo Villegas has been appointed as the Chairman of the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council on February 28, 2024. This was after a vote by the Tour’s membership, which was to appoint Jordan Spieth as a Player Director on the PGA TOUR Policy Board starting January 1, 2025, for a three-year term (2025-2027). PAC’s main job is to provide advice and consultation to the Policy Board and Commissioner Jay Monahan on matters affecting the Tour.
At the post-round presser ahead of the Sony Open in Hawaii on Wednesday, Camilo Villegas was asked how he manages his time being on the board. To this, he replied,
“The PAC is one thing, I board I heard is a completely different thing. Yes, it’s going to be one of my priorities, too, to manage time better, on and off the golf course. If we go back to last year, I felt like I was putting the time but I was lacking the focus when it came to my game and stuff.”Being on the PAC has done worse than better for Villegas’s game. In 2024, he appeared in 26 events and made cuts only in six of them. Well, that was not all, he dropped down to the 197 rank on the OWGR list and also failed to grab any top-25 position in the events. He does not wish to continue the same.
Taking to this, the 43-year-old said, “This year, one of my goals is to be more efficient when I get to the golf course, take care of business when I need to take care of business, and then when it comes to the board stuff, obviously I’m representing a large group of players, and I’ve got to find time to just kind of communicate with people and talk about it.”
However, with the 2025 schedule on his hands, he will be looking for a way in which he can segregate between his training, and practice sessions, and also abide by his role as a board member. You see the navigation of a hectic schedule is not something everyone can do. Remember when Rory McIlroy resigned?
Rory McIlroy did not have enough time for the PAC
On November 14, 2023, ahead of the DP World Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy abruptly resigned from the PGA Tour Policy Board. But what exactly was the reason? Well, it was time management. He said, “Something had to give. There are only so many hours in a day and only so many days in a week. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now between trying to be a world-class golfer and trying to be a good husband and a good father.” And well, that is not all. He is only trying to grow his profile as much as he can.
He had been working with Tiger Woods on TGL, which just launched on January 7, 2025. Now bringing up a new league requires a lot of time, and the Northern Irishman did not have it in him to put so much on the plate. It would be difficult to dispute that Rory McIlroy, during what are likely the peak years of his already illustrious career, has been a significant asset to the PGA Tour since joining the board in 2021. With good reason, he takes clear pride in the contribution he has made.
