For the ninth event of the 2024 season, the Korn Ferry Tour has laid down its tents in Arlington, Texas, for the Veritex Bank Championship. At the Texas Rangers Golf Club, the aspiring youngsters started round one, and no one would have expected it to go down as a historical day in KFT history. As the round concluded, the 24-year-old Frankie Capan III took the solo lead.

He shot a bogey-free round with four consecutive birdies, an eagle on the front nine, and seven consecutive birdies from the 10th hole to the 16th, carding the lowest round ever seen on the Texas Ranger GC. Capan also claimed the second-lowest round, after Cristobal del Solar’s round of 57, in KFT history with this 13-under, 58 stunner.

Notably, Scottie Scheffler previously held the low course record, shooting 12 under 59 in 2020 at the Texas Rangers Golf Course during a fun round with friends. And now that that was broken by one of their own, the KFT made it a point to make it known. Posting the signed score card with Capan III on Instagram, they wrote, “Scottie’s first L in four weeks.”

The 24-year-old pro was also beaming with excitement, for he had been able to break a Scheffler record. “Whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, you’ve got to take an advantage,” he stated proudly. And boy was he right—after all, the World No. 1 has had four wins in his last five events, one of which is his second major!

The KFT and Capan III weren’t the only ones excited for this feat. The golf world, too, was more than happy. All over social media, fans began celebrating alongside him, showering the 24-year-old pro with love and cheers for his historic achievement of one-upping Scheffler!

It goes without saying that Frankie Capan III’s round one at the Veritex Bank Championship was without a doubt. It certainly goes without saying that he was cooking; however, fans certainly wanted to say it, and praising him for his low round, they flooded the comments with praises like, “You’re HIM way to go Frank 👏🔥” and“Well done Frankie!”

As much as the golf world enjoyed the youngster’s skill, they were also just as glad that Scheffler had finally been dethroned after his ridiculously good last couple of weeks (with 4 wins and 1 runner-up finish in his last 5 appearances on the course and 9 top-10 finishes this year alone). “Scotty who?” wrote one celebrating Scheffler’s downfall, while another chimed in with “Got his a**”!

Even though Capan III has not yet won the Veritex Bank Championship, his feat from the first day will undoubtedly be jotted down in the history books. Of course, if he won after this stunner, it would make his celebrations even sweeter, but regardless, fans also recognized that he deserved credit. “Well earned place in history,” stated one proudly.

After a flood of birdies on the back nine, Capan III ended his round with a neat par-save on the 18th—a hole a fair few on the course bogeyed during the day. Recognizing that, one fan applauded him online and said, “Insane! With a par on the last too!”

It is undoubtedly just the start for Frankie Capan III. And with the show he put on during the Thursday round at the Veritex Bank Championship’s round one, it’s safe to say that he just may break many more records going forward!
