Following hip surgery in February, Hudson Swafford is fully healthy and eager to continue playing LIV Golf. He will, however, be a reserve for the remaining 2023 League games. He will play that part for the first time alongside Andy Ogletree and Wade Ormsby at this week’s LIV Golf Greenbrier. Swafford is glad to be back in the LIV event atmosphere despite sharing the hitting spot and having few opportunities.

“It’s good to be back in the atmosphere of a LIV event,” Swafford smiled and said.

He is excited about the chance to return to the competitive atmosphere of a LIV tournament despite not being a current participant. The RangeGoats GC captain, Bubba Watson, recognized Swafford’s dedication and invited him to be the top reserve option for the LIV Golf Greenbrier competition. This shows that his dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed.

“It’s really nice to see him out here,” Watson remarked. “He’s worked hard. For him to get here to this point where he is able to walk pain-free and hit balls pain-free, that’s huge.”

Swafford is still enthusiastic and wants to take advantage of any chance that presents itself in the 2023 season. He is establishing contacts with captains and players in preparation for his return to the LIV Golf circuit and his goal to compete at the highest level.

Swafford’s road to recovery: A journey of recovery

After competing in all eight of the tournaments of the inaugural 2022 Invitational Series, Swafford’s career unexpectedly took a turn last summer when his right hip started to bother him. With the aid of physical therapy, he was able to play through the discomfort, but his performance decreased and he was scoreless during the regular season.

Swafford sought to rediscover his form by competing in two Asian Tour tournaments in the Middle East at the start of the 2023 LIV season after LIV Golf’s prolonged break.

“I didn’t want to play hurt,” Swafford said. “I didn’t want to actually end up hurting my back and make it a career-ending deal. So, I just went ahead and did what I thought was best.”

However, his injury worsened throughout the International Series Oman, forcing him to withdraw from the competition. After speaking with his doctor, he decided that surgery was necessary, with a 4-6 month recovery period.

Swafford’s recovery started after the operation, after which he spent four weeks on crutches. Interestingly, he performed better than anticipated during his rehabilitation process and began to chip and putt just six weeks following the operation. He was granted the go-ahead to strike motorists after three months had passed.

Swafford chuckled, “I might’ve hit ’em a couple of days earlier than that. I was feeling good. The golf part was the easy part. Hitting balls was the easy part. It was obviously walking and building stamina back up that was needed.”

Swafford watched LIV Golf broadcasts religiously while recovering, supporting his old teammates and friends. His old teammate Talor Gooch from the 2022 London competition has switched sides throughout the seasons. Had he not been injured, Swafford had wanted to rejoin Gooch as a teammate in 2023.
