The PGA Tour is on the cusp of significant changes, and the implications for golfers are far-reaching. As the tour navigates its new landscape, questions arise about how these changes will impact golfers of varying levels of fame and success. Phil Landes, also known as “Big Randy” from the online golf brand No Laying Up’s YouTube channel, shared his thoughts on the matter, highlighting the potential advantages and disadvantages for golfers like Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Adam Scott.
According to Landes, popular golfers like Spieth and Fowler will likely receive numerous sponsor exemptions due to their ability to draw in crowds. This will give them a significant advantage in securing their spots on the tour. However, Landes noted that this will harm many other golfers who are not as well-known. Landes pointed to Adam Scott as an example of a golfer who was able to play his way back into the top 50 last season by taking advantage of exemptions into signature events. “You know, guys who are outside of that top 50 now, like Jordan Spieth and Ricky Fowler, and you know, I mentioned Justin Rose, like guys who are going to get a lot of exemptions. And probably going to follow, if they have any shred of their normal form, will probably follow that, like Adam Scott’s model, what he did this past year”, he said.
Landes acknowledged that Adam Scott had played well, but noted that he hadn’t started the season on a strong footing. Landes believes it’s reasonable to give popular golfers like Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth access to tournaments. “I do think that’s a good middle ground, where it’s like, yeah, give Ricky and Jordan and these guys who are going to put bu**s in the seats.” However, to keep their cards, they’ll need to earn their way back by competing in other tournaments.
