The last few years were a rough patch for Fowler, who was visibly struggling. But 2023 brought a new dawn for the ‘orange crush’ fans. It raised the big question: “Is Rickie Fowler back to his old self?” Although he missed the cut at this year’s PGA Championship, his performance is rising on the charts after that. He finished in T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and landed in T9 at the Memorial Tournament.

And then the US Open will always be historical, where he was T5, but his masterstroke was the opening-round 8-under 62, the lowest for any major tournament. Then at the Travelers Championship, he may not have won, but he held his own. Despite the loss, he created another record for himself. At the event, he almost became the 12th player on the PGA Tour to card a 59.

The last time Rickie enjoyed this kind of success was in 2014, when he had a good run at all the major tournaments. He finished in second place at the US Open and The Open Championship. And tied for third at the PGA Championship. But then, unfortunately, things slowed down!

It was after a gap of three years that he ended in the top 5 at a major once more with a T5 finish at the 2017 US Open, followed by a runner-up finish at the 2018 Masters. Meanwhile, he had substantial wins at Tour events in between, winning 4 out of his 5 Tour wins since his increasing 2014 top 5 major run. However, he has yet to achieve the huge milestone of winning a major tournament, which fans have long awaited.

But despite his long wait for the win, Fowler has been a fan favorite for a long time. His recent gesture at the US Open of signing a fan’s hat as a memoir and his willingness to take multiple pictures with them in a quest to get a perfect picture has been appreciated by the fans. He enjoys huge popularity among the golf community, and his confession of being in contention with his achievements has only raised fans’ love for him.

At the Detroit Golf Club, Fowler is vying for the trophy and the $8.8 million purse. In fact, he had found a supporter in Paige Spiranac, who says that her pick for winning the event is Fowler. During her video appearance for PointsBet Sportsbook, she said, I am going to stick with Rickie until he wins.”

Besides Spiranac, fans are also waiting for Fowler to finally break free of his winless drought that’s haunted him since 2019. And perhaps if he does win this week, he can carry on the hot streak and grab his first major next month! However, whether he’ll be able to do so, only time will tell.
