Lee Elder, who was one of the most well-known entities in the golfing world, passed away on Sunday night. The former golfer was 87-years-old and was struggling with his health recently. Notably, Elder had 448 PGA Tour starts and had won four titles in his career. He even registered his first victory on the Tour in 1974 and earned an invitation to the 1975 Masters.
Even though he faced a lot of atrocities throughout his career, Lee never bowed down to any difficulties. Hence, fans and players regarded him as a legend, even though he didn’t win many events as a golfer. Notably, when he competed in the Masters for the first time in 1975, he carded 74 and 78 and missed the cut.

He played in the Masters five more times with the best finish of T17 in 1979. During the 2021 Masters, Augusta National announced it would honor Lee Elder by naming him an honorary starter along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Sadly, Elder could not hit a shot, but he received the loudest cheer from the crowd.
Golf world mourns the passing of Lee Elder
Elder’s contributions were not limited to the world of golf. He made a scholarship for low-income young men and women seeking money for college. Moreover, he even served on the board for goodwill and was also a fundraiser for the United Negro College Fund.

Furthermore, Augusta National announced in 2020 that it will fund the creation of a women’s golf program at Paine College and established scholarships at Paine College in his honor.
Lee Elder was one of the most respected and well-known entities in the golfing world. Hence, there were a lot of sad reactions to this news, especially on Twitter. Players, journalists, fans, and others mourned his death, sharing their precious memories of Elder.
