Payne was 42 when he passed away in a tragic plane crash. Notably, he had just won the 1999 U.S. Open just a few months ago before the accident. The then 42-year-old had won 11 PGA Tour titles, including three majors. He had won the 1989 PGA championship and the U.S. Open in 1991 and 1999.
The American golfer was widely known for his playfulness and unique sense of fashion. Notably, he is survived by his wife Tracey and children Chelsea and Aaron.

Payne is known for his unique mannerism on the course. For the same, the U.S. Open paid tribute to the golfer by erecting a statue of his 1999 winning pose at the 18th green of No.2.
Stewart won his last major against Phil Mickelson. Although he won the championship, Payne considered the then soon-to-be-father, Mickelson’s feelings, and shouted, “You’re going to be a father!” The compassion he had for the others was clear from his notable gestures. He wanted to make Phil happy and not be sad about losing.
