Canceling a veterans' benefit golf tournament over threats—what does this say about our society today?

There have been many incidents that led to the cancellation, delay, or abrupt halt of golf tournaments. From rainy weather to horrifying storms, we have seen it all. But the reason the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Golf Tournament is getting canceled takes the cake. In a shocking turn of events, the eighth annual tournament has been called off due to threatening messages sent to participants. That is pretty shocking, right?

The event was scheduled for August 30 and was called off by the Franklin County Commissioners and Penn National Golf Club. While it is utterly disappointing news, we’ve got to remember that everyone’s safety comes first. Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst came forward and simply acknowledged that the safety of the participants is the top priority. “The safety of everyone—our staff, our volunteers, our participants, and the residents of Penn National—is our utmost priority,” said Horst.

The event was meant to be a celebration of service and community as it honored the county’s 13,000 veterans. “This tournament has always been about honoring and supporting our veterans, and we are disappointed that the cowardly actions of one individual have ruined this year’s event,”  Horst continued. Unfortunately, the tournament’s cancellation means this opportunity to show support is lost.

Players had paid the $520 registration fee per foursome as they were excited to choose between playing Founders or Iron Forges, but is their money lost? Let us find out.

Refund system at the Franklin County Veterans

As we all know, the golf tournament was more than just a game; it was a way for them to give back to those who have served their country. All the money was meant to benefit the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Outreach Fund, which provides vital support to the county’s 13,000 veterans. But can it happen now? Yes, it can if people intend to.

Even with the dark clouds roaming above the tournament, the amazing kindness of their sponsors and participants can still be a game-changer for the veterans! For those who are eager to learn more or request a refund, the information is available on Franklin County’s official website. In case you don’t request a refund, the funds will still go towards making a real difference in the lives of local veterans, just as it was originally intended. The 2023 Franklin County Veterans Affairs Golf Tournament had raised a whopping $69,042.11, which was later used to support local veterans.
