The 2024 season has indeed been one for the books in the golf world. With record-breaking performances, the leagues have managed to outdo themselves. From Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler bagging the highest number of wins in one season in history to Lydia Ko getting inducted into the Hall of Fame and winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics in August, it has been exceptionally breathtaking. Before the wonderful year comes to an end, let us walk down memory lane and revisit the top three shots that were added to all the record-breaking performances of the year.
1. Bryson DeChambeau’s winning bunker shot at the US Open
Bryson DeChambeau bagged his second major at Pinehurst this year. It was all because of the bunker shot that he carded on the final hole. He carded it from 55 yards and knocked the ball four feet for the par putt. It was the extra shot that he required to grab the trophy.

At the 2024 US Open, he scored a 71 in the final round and took his score to 6-under, defeating Rory McIlroy by a close one-shot lead. The bunker shot was an exceptional one. Lou Stagner noted that the Tour pros only manage to get that close from that distance only 1.7% of the time. This is what makes the shot an even more significant one as it occurred on the final hole of the U.S. Open.
2. Jeeno Thitikul’s eagle at the CME Group Tour Championship
Trailing by two shots with two holes remaining, Jeeno Thitikul knew exactly what she needed to do to seize the biggest prize in women’s golf—and she executed flawlessly. For the second day in a row, a brilliant eagle-birdie finish propelled her to victory.

With a 7-under 65 on Sunday, she finished at an accumulated score of 22-under and was one shot ahead of Angel Yin. Thitikul claimed the historic $4 million first-place check at the CME Group Tour Championship on Sunday, setting a new record for the largest prize in women’s golf, even surpassing the winner’s share of three of this year’s men’s major championships. “Today, standing here with the trophy, it’s more than I can ask for,” Thitikul said.

3. Billy Horschel’s putt in the PGA Championship playoff
Matteo Manassero entered the BMW PGA Championship’s final round with a solo lead. However, as he struggled through the round on Sunday, it gave way to Thriston Lawrence, Aaron Rai, Rory McIlroy, and Billy Horschel to take away the limelight. Ahead of the back nine, it was Aaron Rai who took over completely and was two strokes ahead of Billy Horschel and McIlroy. As they reached the 17th hole, the Northern Irishman hit two shots and reached the green, and then ended up carding a 45-foot putt for eagle, sharing the lead with Rai.
Billy Horschel, on the other hand, carded a birdie on the hole to stay one shot behind, ahead of the 18th hole. He almost holed his third shot from 90 yards for an eagle, while McIlroy came close to finding the water with his second. A par from McIlroy and a birdie from Horschel led to a three-way playoff, with both players finishing at 20 under, joined by the third competitor.
Early on, it was Lawrence who struggled, finding himself in trouble, while Horschel and McIlroy both carded birdies. However, as they reached the second playoff, they were in the center of the green and had the chance to card an eagle. But it was only Horschel’s ball that rolled end-over-end and went straight into the hole, grabbing him the trophy for the second time at Wentworth.
