The 2025 Farmers Insurance Open has been nerve-racking so far. Fans have witnessed a lot of ups and downs in the first three rounds of the tournament. At one point, it seemed like Ludvig Aberg had a firm grip on the top of the leaderboard. However, the events of round 3 have seen him drop to eight tied with pros who had played 6 strokes more than him.

Did you miss out on all the action? Then you must be wondering how did this happen. Well, there is one simple explanation for this, and that’s the weather. The Torrey Pines Golf Courses are plagued with strong winds that are making the course unplayable. The 30 mph wind and rain have completely reshuffled the leaderboard of the tournament as some unlikely names are now at the top. So how can the pros deal with such weather conditions?

This is not the first time the Farmers Insurance Open has been cursed with high wind speeds and light showers. Something similar happened in the 2016 version of the event that featured Billy Horschel & Co. Even back then, the leaderboard had been heavily affected by the weather causing many players to miss out on the top 10.

A couple of years ago, Golf.com shared a few tips on how the players can deal with the strong winds. Let’s see what the experts had to suggest.

Calmness is the key

Players should anticipate facing strong winds when they are playing at venues like Torrey Pines Golf Course. But the good thing is, usually not all 4 days are windy. The pros should learn to remain calm and pick their moments to play aggressively.

But when they are being challenged by the wind and rain, the best they can do is play safe. There is no need to aim for a birdie on every hole. Matching par will ensure that they can live to fight another day.

Get ready to adapt

Even those who are most familiar with such courses often lose their focus when facing abrupt weather conditions. They can overcome their nerves if they are mentally prepared to adapt to the strong winds and rain. Players should have a plan for how to play when the wind shifts in either of the directions. This will help them maintain control while those around them are busy wasting time figuring out how they would approach the situation.

Keep it low

One thing that every good golfer knows is that, when it’s windy, you should keep the ball low. The higher the ball is, the more it will be affected by the wind and rain. Try to cut the ball less. Instead, focus on hitting it with a fuller phase to land flatter shots that have a better chance of accuracy. Remember, you will only be your worst enemy if you are too ambitious in windy conditions.

Pick the right fairway woods

Golfers should know that they may need to carry at least a different fairway wood when they are visiting windy and rainy venues like the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Woods that offer a lot less loft are ideal for such conditions. They also provide more pace generally, which makes it easy to pierce through the wind. Flat and speedy shots will help you reach your targets much more accurately than anyone else on the course. Unless of course they too have implemented the same strategy on the windy day.

When on green, consider the wind and moisture

Spin is not a factor when you’re rolling the ball on the green. But what does play a big role is the rotation of the ball. Even if you read the green going from right to left, you need to also consider the direction of the wind. If the wind too is moving towards the left then maybe you need to hit it at a little more angle. However, if it’s blowing towards the right, then hitting the ball a little straighter might do you good. Similarly, a wet green may also lead to overstriking the ball as it wouldn’t stop rolling. Hence, the power behind the shot should also be considered during rains.

These were just some of the tips we could think of that would definitely help you tackle the adverse weather conditions better. You can also follow the guidelines provided for the windy weather of the Plantation Course. The windy conditions at The Sentry and the Farmers Insurance Open are quite similar.
