When a young golfer begins to win overwhelmingly, Tiger Woods parallels become unavoidable. The most recent individual to be hailed as golf’s next generational prodigy is the Swedish phenom Ludvig Aberg. The debate has only gotten more heated after he won the Genesis Invitational, which Tiger Woods himself hosted.

Aberg’s rise has been rapid. Despite being a professional for less than a year, he has already established himself with victories in Europe and, most recently, on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines. Aberg showed incredible poise in the last round of the Genesis Invitational, easily handling the pressure and making four birdies on his final six holes to win. His versatility is illustrated by his ability to swing forcefully and fluidly, remain calm under pressure, and be long off the tee.

Does that, however, mean he’s headed for Tiger Woods 2.0 status? A few individuals in the golfing community are pushing back against this idea. So, let’s dig in!

A questionable comparison: Insider’s opinion

Unquestionably, Ludvig Aberg’s victory at the Genesis Invitational was a significant turning point in his career, but is it truly what some others are portraying it as? On the Drop Zone Golf Podcast, hosts James Colgan, Dylan Dethier, and Sean Zak examined Aberg’s ascent in greater detail. Specifically, Zak wasn’t prepared to fall for the excitement just yet. He stated, “I’m a little bit dubious on that,” adding that although Aberg’s victory at Torrey Pines was a remarkable comeback, the conditions made it feel different from the legendary Genesis Invitationals held at Riviera Country Club. Even though the field was good, it wasn’t precisely the same, and the way the course was built up affected how the competition went.

Zak emphasized that Aberg had also played Torrey Pines previously in the season, although in far more difficult circumstances. “Yeah, it’s really funny because Ludvig played this golf course a couple of weeks ago. And granted, he was puking because he had the flu, but he almost won the tournament that was already played at Torrey Pines in January,” Zak noted. The field was actually stronger at that event, he claimed; therefore, Aberg’s near-win at the time was possibly as important as his Genesis triumph. Therefore, how much importance should we place on this most recent victory if he was already demonstrating his abilities on the same course weeks earlier? Given that Tiger’s greatest memorable wins frequently occurred in stressful situations and against the most formidable opposition, the analogies to Tiger seem premature.

Naturally, this is not intended to minimize Aberg’s potential. His calm demeanor and skill at hitting the ball make him an amazing prospect who is sure to win a big championship in the years to come. However, as noted by Zak and others, context is significant. While it’s impressive to win at Torrey Pines, it’s quite another to win like Tiger and dominate the field year after year. For the time being, Aberg is authoring his tale; therefore, golf enthusiasts shouldn’t yet associate him with Tiger Woods. Despite his apparent skill, Aberg faced hardships in becoming a Genesis star, particularly considering the difficult sickness he had just weeks prior. Let’s find out!

The little-known tale of Ludvig Aberg’s struggle with illness

Aberg went through serious health issues before winning. During the Farmers Insurance Open, he experienced a serious stomach ailment that led to his losing over eight pounds in two days. Aberg recalled the experience: “First, I was really hot. Then I got really cold. Lost about eight pounds total in two days, so that’s not the right way to lose weight.”

Concerns regarding his preparedness for the Genesis Invitational were raised after he withdrew from the Pebble Beach Pro-Am due to this sickness. In spite of these obstacles, Aberg showed perseverance and will, which paid off in his outstanding showing at Torrey Pines.

Although Ludvig Aberg’s recent victory demonstrates his potential and determination, it’s important to use caution when drawing analogies to Tiger Woods. Aberg’s journey is only getting started, and it will take time to see whether he can continuously perform at his best under different circumstances and on different courses. For the time being, the golf community eagerly awaits the development of this bright future star.
