Annika Sorenstam, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Lee Trevino; that was the lineup of a random conversation about drivers on a golf course. These legends of the game geared up and got together for an exhibition game earlier this year.
What might seem like a dream field for golf fans turned into a hilarious conversation about the capabilities of a driver. After a brief photo op, the 5 greats started talking about the shafts of the clubs they were holding. After Gary Player said that it would be difficult to play with such clubs, Lee Trevino mentioned a club that he has that “really whips around.” The 29-time PGA Tour winner, Lee Trevino is one of the most loved names in the world of golf. Fondly known as ‘Merry Mex’ or ‘Supermex’, he was a role model for all Mexicans who followed the sport. He was known for his jolly nature and excellent swing.
Coming back to the story, Player questioned Trevino about whether he thought “that hits it [the golf ball] further.” Trevino stated that he finds it convenient to use such clubs as they are “easier for me. I don’t have to swing. It does it by itself because it loads here [raising his arm above his head] and the technology of it, it stiffens at the bottom [when the ball is hit].” The legends then continued to talk about what technology Trevino was referring to.

Fans share their memories of Lee Trevino on his birthday
Lee Trevino is one of the most loved veterans of golf. His endearing personality often leads to enjoyable moments for everyone accompanying or watching him. @brettcavallaro shared a memory he had with the retired pro golfer. He said, “I had an awesome lunch with him at the Greenbrier, where he shared stories about everyone. It was the best.” @colby_cheezee acknowledged Lee Trevino’s skills during his pro years as he said, “I did a book report on Trevino in highschool. Guys got one hell of a swing,”, possibly agreeing with the statement Trevino made about the hidden technology of the whipping shaft. It would definitely be quite helpful for Trevino, who had a small stature. During an interview with @lkd_golf, Trevino admitted that because of his frame, he had developed the habit of hitting hard. This helped him improve his skills before the ‘hidden technology’ was available. @jgilkey25 supported Trevino’s claims as shared his own bit of experience with a similar shaft, “Auto flex shaft. I picked up about 15 yards on my TaylorMade driver.”
@tygahoodsgolf also agreed with Lee Trevino’s logic as he mentioned, “That needs to be @autoflexshaft_us’s new slogan: ‘shafts so good you can hit it twice’,” as if it’s like he suggested a great new tagline for the shaft brand. @marlons.garage mentioned Trevino’s statement in the video that he found to be the most hilarious: “I might be able to hit twice 😂.” Trevino made that statement when Watson said “We can hit” with the golf clubs. @arthurford3 simply said, “Trevino is an absolute legend!” as he acknowledged the impact Lee Trevino has had on the game of golf. Trevino was an inspiration to many young golfers during his time. In 1970, he was the highest-earning golfer in the world. The next season he became the first in the history of golf to win the U.S., British, and Canadian Opens in the same year. His brilliance won him a lot of fans and left a lasting impact on the golf community.
