Xander Schauffele and Austin Kaiser have one of the best Player-Caddie relationships in the golfing world. Their friendship goes back years to their college days when they played together. They laid a great foundation for their partnership on the golf course.

However, in a recent podcast with SubPar, Kaiser revealed an incident from their earlier days when he thought he might get fired!

The hilarious yet unfortunate incident was a follow-up to not making the cut at the 2016 PGA Tour during the AT&T Byron Nelson.

The one moment when Kaiser thought Schauffele would fire him

The golfing community packs a punch on the course, but it is no less interesting off-court. During an interview podcast with Austin Kaiser, GOLF’s SubPar uncovered an amusing yet almost disastrous story.

“That was a rough night. That was the lowest point in my life right there. That was when I thought… that’s probably the time I thought I was going to get fired,” Austin reflected.

The golfer-turned-caddie who has been part of Team Xander for almost a decade, spoke about the 2016 PGA Tour, one of their initial days of partnership. Xander Schauffele was a rookie at the time, trying to find his footing as a Pro Golfer. He missed the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson, but was hardly willing to give up. Kaiser called him a “grinder“, and explained that the PGA Tour golfer intended to rise and shine at 7 am to start practicing for the next event.

Austin shares that he was in his early caddy days and was himself a rookie at age 23, more or less. It was their seventh or eighth event together and Kaiser was still learning the ropes.

When Schauffele didn’t make the cut, “Probably because of me,” Austin jokes, he and his buddy David Pelekoudas, who now caddies for Beau Hossler decided to “go out,” to Downtown Dallas. They incidentally came across a place where there was bottle service for only $300. A young man in his prime as he was, Austin and Dave got a bottle of Grey Goose and Schauffele’s caddie ended up drinking about one-fifth of the bottle.

“In the middle of a thunderstorm, like dumping rain,” Kaiser goes on to explain that he was drunk and ended up in a cemetery “doing snow angels.” A man walked past them inquiring if he needed help, and the young man responded, “Dude shut the f*** up.” That wasn’t even the worst thing he did.

He goes on to further relay why it was a low point in his life. His wife called Xander and said, “I don’t know where Austin is, says he is in a cemetery.” “Why is he in a cemetery?” the Pro golfer queried. Kaiser calls Xander a good friend who agreed to pick him up and asked Kaiser’s then-girlfriend-now-wife to share a screenshot of his location.

Xander arrived momentarily at the cemetery and called Austin who was evidently blacked out hugging a tree. His caddie asked him to honk, and Xander did so from the Courtesy car. When the golfer finally found his caddie, the latter was covered in mud and destroyed the car. Schauffele evidently has pictures of Austin who had to take his shirt off in order to preserve whatever integrity they could of the vehicle.

Once he sobered up, Austin Kaiser was worried that Xander would fire him for having to pick him up at 2:30 in the morning, roughly 4 hours before he was supposed to start practicing. Fortunately for the devoted caddie, Xander overlooked his momentary lapse and focused more on their incredible partnership.

The incident of 2016 was a wake-up call for Austin Kaiser who started taking his job much more seriously. “I’m still learning how to be the best caddy,” Kaiser admitted. “I’m a young guy, and I’m competing against these veterans.” Of course, as it would be his responsibility, now he walks the course to get an idea of the grounds to assist Xander the best he can as his compadre and caddie.

Together, the duo has won seven PGA Tours and is still going steady. “There’s been times when we argued,” says Kaiser. he takes responsibility for not only carrying Schauffele’s golf bag but also for his gameplay. If there ever were the perfect duo on the PGA Tour, these two friends would definitely make that cut.
