The Match” between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had a lot of hype surrounding itself before the event. However, after the much-anticipated match concluded, some fans weren’t very happy with the quality of the golf displayed by the Hall of Famers. One of the critics was the famous Country singer, Jake Owen, who asked Mickelson for a refund the very next day. However, a rich Phil Mickelson didn’t hesitate to pay back the singer with some slight words.

Back in 2019, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods played in a head-to-head play golf challenge for prize money of $9 million. The event took place at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Phil defeated his longtime nemesis, Tiger, after a four-putt birdie on the 22nd hole. Though the event was quite entertaining, many believed the event didn’t fulfill its mission of being a truly different golf showdown.

The pay-per-view match was priced at $29.99 by the broadcasters, TNT. Technical issues troubled the broadcast which resulted in Turner Network and other providers giving out refunds. However, Jake Owen wanted a refund, not for any technical issues, but for the awful display of golf from Tiger and Phil. Luckily for him, Mickelson paid his PPV money back thrice to its value.

The following day after “The Match”, 3-time Major winner Jordan Speith got married. Being a golf royalty and a close friend, Mickelson was invited to the wedding. However, during the wedding ceremony, was where the 52-year-old encountered the Country singer.

Jake Owen, who is an avid golfer himself, spoke about the incident during an episode of Barstool Sports’ Fore Play Podcast. Owen walked up to the golfer and decided to ask for a refund. He said, “‘Hey Phil, you owe me f—ing $29.99!’ I was like, ‘For wasting four hours of my life with the s—iest golf I’ve ever seen! You guys hype this whole thing up about the big match? You guys couldn’t even make three birdies between the two of you? I want my $29.99 back and apologize to me for some s— golf!'”

The Country singer then revealed how Phil Mickelson responded without missing a beat. The 6 time Major winner pulled out a stack of $100 bills, and told him, “I won 90,000 of these things yesterday. Take a $100 and go f— yourself!’” A few days after the podcast was released, Mickelson confirmed the story by tweeting, “True story”, with a smile emoji on the side.

Despite their differences, both Phil and Owens have seemed to settle their beef as they even played golf together during the Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro-Am event. Considering Lefty’s humorous character, it’s hard for anyone to hold any grudges against the golfer for so long.
