The Farmers Insurance Open is heading into the final stages this weekend, but one player won’t be making it to the latter stages. Returning from an extended back issue, Will Zalatoris is still adjusting to life back in the top flight. He missed the cut by merely one stroke at the Torrey Pines South Course. But his 36-hole adventure featured plenty of anxious moments, especially his astonishing putt at the 13th.

Will Zalatoris’ magical putt on the 13th

The 26-year-old started well at the Torrey, shooting a 4-under 68 on Wednesday. However, his day went south the following day. He made six consecutive bogeys in his first seven holes which shot him down the ranks.

Though he made some ground in the following holes, Zalatoris was in need of a miracle to continue his comeback streak at the Farmers. But a bogey on the 17th hole put him on the wrong side of par. He culminated with a 12-foot miss for a birdie, which all but ended his hopes.

However, his putt at the 13th hole made the rounds. Having placed his putter perfectly, Zalatoris had his heart in his mouth when the ball traveled straighter than expected. However, it turned back to its natural course and landed in the hole, much to the relief of the golfer.

Fans were quick to pounce on the clip of Zalatoris’ putt. Here’s a selection of those tweets.

How is Zalatoris shaping up on his comeback?

The California-born withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship in August last year due to a back injury. The blow kept him out for months, but he made it back in time for the start of the new PGA Tour season.

Zalatoris participated in the inaugural PGA Tour event, the Tournament of Champions. His return was impressive, shooting a score of 20-under par to finish tied at 11th place. He followed that up with T36 at the American Express at the PGA WEST Private Clubhouse & Golf Course last weekend.

While Zalatoris will be disappointed with his return at the Farmers Insurance Open, he would hope for an improvement in results with each passing tournament. Considered a bright prospect in the golf circuit, the 26-year-old has an agonizing three runners-up finishes in major championships.
