Before starting his 10th run at the Sony Open, Gary Woodland had one question for himself. Could he conjure up the focus that he used to bring on the greens? Although the event did not end up as Woodland had expected, even then, he met one of his set goals.

The first two rounds of the Sony Open have concluded, and Woodland finds himself outside of the top 60 and ties. Missing the cut is indeed disappointing. Even though he failed to qualify, he did gain an unlikely win in the process.

After going through critical surgery to remove a tumor from his brain in September, Gary Woodland returned to the golf course, trying to find his footing again. The comeback of Woodland could be seen as inspiring, as the 4-time PGA Tour winner came with one motive while he played in Honolulu: playing better.

Woodland only wanted to get his focus back, which had deteriorated because of the tumor. And fortunately, he did just that. In a post-match presser, Woodland said that his “Focus was amazing,” declaring that it was the “Best focus” he has had in a year. Furthermore, he accepted that he never wanted to miss the cut but asserted, “It was bigger for me this week than golf.”

However, when it came to his golfing skills, he agreed that it was “rusty scoring-wise.” But the 1x major champ was happy with his mentality. He stated that “It was the best week” he had after a long time, and it was “beautiful” to experience, and everything has turned out “great” for him.

Talking about his mental space and focus again, he found that it was present all through the week, and he had found the answer to his various doubts prior to the event. Woodland then optimistically announced that, after enduring the surgery, “good things are happening.” As he ended his Sony Open on a happy yet sour note, he went on to share his takeaway from the two rounds.
