Over the course of his impressive career, Gary Player managed to win over 160 tournaments. During the six decades that the South African star spent on the course, he set records with an approximate 46 Open and 52 Masters appearances. Along with these staggering numbers, Player has undoubtedly visited multiple courses.

Having played at these numerous courses, the nine-time major winner has unquestionably witnessed many gorgeous greens, from Augusta to St. Andrews. However, one such course in particular recently caught his eye, forcing him to indulge in a Gen Z move and do something he does “not often” do.

Player’s love for the Open Championship is undying. He finds it to be the toughest tournament. And also believes it to be the most historic tournament in the history of golf. His recent Instagram posts hint at the same. It also hints at nostalgia as Gary Player reflects on the years he has been associated with Golf.

Amidst the multiple golf courses he has experienced, he came across one so beautiful that he did what he seldom does: Gary Player posted a photo of himself on Instagram (a typical Gen Z move) with him at one of his favorite spaces to play golf—The Turnberry in Europe—which is now owned by Donald Trump.

He wrote, “With all the golf I’ve played in my life, it is not often that I stop to snap a photo on a green. But Turnberry is incredibly special and is a close second to Pine Valley in my top two courses. No doubt Turnberry deserves to be back on The Open’s Rota. It’s an absolute paradise of links golf with a storied history.”

In a recent interview, The South African golfer appreciated the sensational changes the former POTUS’ has made to it since taking over in 2014. Player’s favorite part was that the tees were high up in the dunes, enabling one to see the ocean.

Despite the golf legend’s appreciation of the course, it seems unlikely now that the Turnberry will play host to The Open Championship, an event it’s hosted four times in the past. The reason? Security risks!

Why can Turnberry not host the Open Championship again?

Donald Trump’s association with the Turnberry golf resort in Scotland stands as a hurdle. That is why the historic golf club will not witness the Open Championship tournament. In recent times, the R&A, which regulates the British Open, has clarified that it will never host the tournament in Turnberry as long as Trump is associated with it.

Turnberry first hosted the Open in 1977, and its last time was in 2009. In 2014, the Trump organization purchased the Golf course, and since then, the course has never seen a major on its greens. The main reason the R&A is firm on avoiding the golf course at all costs is due to potential protests arising concerning Trump’s affiliation with the course.

Earlier this year, The Open was all set to host the event there once more, but they backed away just months before, citing the same security issues. Instead, the major returned to Royal Liverpool this year. Next year, the event will greet the Royal Troon in Scotland for the tenth time, yet again overlooking the Turnberry.
