NBC's Solheim Cup coverage was a disaster—do American fans deserve better treatment?

The current situation of the Solheim Cup is “a total mess.” From the opening ceremony to Friday’s foursome matches, numerous issues have made it hard for fans to enjoy the tournament. While many hoped things would improve by Saturday, instead, the situation has become even worse.

On Friday, one spectator at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club was frustrated because of the loud music at the club and expressed their frustration, saying, “Sorry. Is the Solheim Cup part of the LIV tour now? Turn that music off!!!!!! #SolheimCup.” Not only that, there were also 2-3 hours of transportation delays on Friday, which further made it difficult for the fans to reach the course on time, and they ended up missing the first tee. Now the fans who were enjoying the tournament at their homes aren’t having a pleasant experience either.

It happened after NBC didn’t provide the score breakdowns; instead, they were just displaying the team scores. Witnessing that, No Laying Up reshared a post of a fan where they highlighted the difficulty of understanding the score breakdown and said, “They have heard our calls to want to understand the score of the match and made it worse. I’m in awe. Almost rooting for it at this point.” Now people are only able to see the team scores instead of full breakdowns, making it more confusing, for someone who is probably new to the sport, or someone who wants to have a complete picture of how the score reached where they did.

Taking the display of the score into account, another added Catching up on the #SolheimCup, the TV coverage by @GolfChannel is a joke. There are only 4 matches going on, only 8 balls in play at any one time, and they are showing less than 25% of the shots. It’s actually amazing how little golf they show.” Surprisingly, even last year, the tournament broadcast team came under similar scrutiny. On Sunday, instead of capturing the action at the Solheim Cup, the broadcast spent almost 30 seconds showing a pair of dragonflies. Unfortunately, fans are having a similar frustrating broadcasting experience this time too.

This fan also took a jab at the coverage by NBC, saying, “Total garbage coverage by NBC, as usual. Add that to the list of f-k-ups associated with the Solheim Cup today. What a total mess.” Speaking of mess, the opening ceremony’s broadcast experience was also ruined for many fans as there were “awful camera angles, poor sound feed, badly timed walk-ons.” In addition, transportation delays further ruined the experience, and now this mayhem is an added trouble.

This fan was so fed up that they decided to skip the Solheim Cup altogether and focus on other golf events going on; “Enjoying the DP WT broadcast and seeing RCD.” The action at the Irish Open is in full swing, as after Round 3’s play, home’s favorite, Rory McIlroy is on top with a 1-stroke lead.

Talking about both the transportation delays and the frustrating broadcast of NBC, this fan made a bold remark, saying, “Are we sure NBC/GC didn’t bribe the bus companies to create a diversion and take the heat off of them for once? It cannot be ruled out.” Pointing out that NBC may have intentionally instructed the bus companies to cause delays, hoping it would divert attention away from the score breakdown issue.

This fan expressed their frustration with a sarcastic comment, saying, “Next year’s Ryder Cup will not have a score. All the matches will be played, and then at the end, they’ll just announce a winner.” Last year at least fans were able to keep track of proper scores, but with this time’s coverage fans are losing hope in next year’s Ryder Cup coverage which is to be held at Bethpage, and Americans will be avenging their loss too.
