Golf, given its unpredictability, often witnesses its heroes not making even the cut in certain tournaments. While these disappointments are surprising, they are not rare. This week alone, after the 36-holes at the Genesis Scottish Open, many noteworthy players headed home early after failing to register their names for the third day of the event.

While the likes of Rory McIlroy, Sam Burns, and Max Homa have been able to overcome the challenging greens and their weather conditions, other golf stars like Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott have fallen prey to the same. The course did not show anyone mercy, not even the golfer who went on to make his first hole-in-one! Here are some of the players who failed to qualify for the final 36 holes at the Tom Doak-designed links.

On Friday, the Renaissance Club welcomed quite gloomy weather, literally and figuratively. While the playing conditions were far from dry, many golfers found themselves at the distal end of the leaderboard after the cut for the event was announced. And among the many names was also that of the former Ryder Cup player, Nicolas Colsaerts!

Despite his stupendous efforts on the second day, Colsaerts failed to make it past the cutline for the tournament. As it happened, the Belgian professional golfer found himself beautifully striking the golf ball and delivering an ace. That hole-in-one was then followed by an eagle at the 16th hole.

However, the two shots couldn’t help him stay within par. With his last shot, Colsaerts carded a bogey, and he found himself joining the list of players below the final cut. And he wasn’t alone there either! Many renowned golfers also ended up with a score of 3-under par or more, which was not enough to play over the weekend.

Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, and other noteworthy golf stars bid an early farewell to the Renaissance Golf Club

The co-sanctioned tournament by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour has completed its first two rounds. The cut for the event came in at 2-under 138, which led to the early exit of many big names. Here are some of the biggest and most surprising of them:

1. Jordan Spieth: Following his underwhelming performance at the US Open, Spieth spun a similar web this time as well. The Texas golfer who generally tames the link-styled greens couldn’t overcome the challenge posed by the Renaissance Golf Course. He was able to deliver only the rounds of 72–69, which handed him a missed cut.

2. Adam Scott: The Aussie golfer created such an uphill battle for himself on day 1 with a 2-over 72 that he couldn’t conquer it on Friday. In short, the 3-under-69 wasn’t sufficient to get Scott to make the cut at the Scottish Open.

3. Patrick Cantlay: Astonishingly, the tournament has been the first missed cut for the American golfer since the WM Phoenix Open in 2023. Despite being one of the leading contenders for the title, Cantlay couldn’t help but find trees succeeding his shots. This led the golfer to shoot 2-over par on day 1, resulting in a disheartening finish.

4. Matt Fitzpatrick: The 2022 US Open winner suffered his second missed cut of the season. Before the Scottish Open, it was the PGA Championship that saw Fitzpatrick not make it to the third round of the tournament. However, after that, the golfer registered three top-20 finishes, but now, once again, the rounds of 69–73 have given the rest to Fitzpatrick on the weekends.

Other than them, Justin Rose, Sungjae Im, and Ludvig Aberg were also among the popular names who missed the cut at the 2023 Scottish Open. Many of these stars are also competing next week at the last men’s golf major, the 2023 Open Championship. And they will certainly hope that their performance there won’t be even remotely similar to this week’s.
