At 63 years, six months, and five days Fred Couples became the oldest ever player to make the cutline at the Masters Tournament in 2023. The relentless competitor and outspoken savant is a well-known face in the golfing circles. His refusal to give up allows him to take part in golf at the highest level with ease. For those who don’t know, he is currently competing at the Hoag Classic on the PGA Tour Champions, and something happened there. Both good and bad, per golf standards.
After finishing the first day on T7, Couples, who had been battling a bug all week, roared back with an impressive 7 under-par performance to share the lead for the first place with one more day of play left to go. Despite the exemplary performance on day 2, one awkward moment stood out.
Couples was teeing up for a shot, but his natural movement was a bit off. As a result, the shot was wayward toward the right, landing a bit too close to the watching crowd at the Newport Beach Country Club. The disappointed Couples was heard on the telecast saying, “f**k you, you smart a** mother f**ker!” Now, dropping f-bombs after a bad shot is not a new thing. We have all witnessed Tyrrell Hatton drop a few now and then. Interestingly, this wasn’t Couples’s first rodeo either.

At one of the events, many years ago, Couples hit a bunker shot, it was a good one, no doubt there, but overall, he was having a horrendous day. Couples expressed out loud, “Goddamnit!” and after that proceeded to drop a few choice words. It was more a sigh of relief than one borne out of frustration.

The disappointment and anger were evident in his words, but netizens were not too sympathetic to his plight. Instead, they were quick to poke fun at the 65-year-old’s expense after the bizarre reaction.

Fans call out Fred Couples’s wayward drive
Netizens were quick to compare themselves to the golfing legend, with one stating, “One of us.” Most amateurs are also prone to quick abuses while dealing with a mistimed shot or an unplanned obstacle. Couples do really seem to be one of us, in that singular incident. Another fan also expressed his delight at seeing Couples being passionate, tweeting, “He is the man.”
Couples is a very prolific driver of the ball, nicknamed “Boom Boom” for his long and accurate stroke off the tee. His swinging mechanism is near perfection and the ball produces a crisp sound on contact with the club. So it was very surprising to see his swing miss the mark on the course. One fan, however, felt that Couples was due a break after captivating audiences throughout his career with his swing, stating, “Boom Boom can say whatever he wants.”
Another fan took the funny route, claiming that the words used by the golfer after the wayward shot were golf-related terminologies that only people at the highest level of the sport know about. “These are highly technical golf terms,” he explained. Yeah, right! We believe you.

Very recently, Couples made the golf headlines, when he mentioned on the KJR 93.3 FM that Brooks Koepka wants out of LIV Golf. However, the five-time Major winner was quick to rebuff the claim made by the 1992 Masters Champion. One fan took this incident as a reference and indicated that Couples was talking about Koepka after the shot. “Is he talking about Brooksy?” The netizen quipped.
Jokes aside, Couples will look to claim his 15th PGA Tour Champions title on day 3. He will be looking to compete at the upcoming Masters Tournament as he chases Jack Nicklaus’s record of most made cuts at the Augusta National Golf Course. Do you think the ‘Forever Young’ Couples can make the cut at the 2025 Masters as well?
