Couples portrayed his resentment toward players who joined the Saudi-backed golf league on Wednesday. The American professional is the captain of a team in a unique match-play event that is taking place this week at Liberty National.
Moreover, the event features some famous sports personalities like Michael Phelps and former NBA guard JR Smith. Fred spoke about professionals like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson joining the LIV Golf Invitational Series. At the same time, he made it clear that he is not joining the rival league.
Furthermore, Couples talked about the six-time major championship winner’s interviews while making a bold remark about the same. He also spoke about other professionals like Pat Perez. The World Golf Hall of Famer also raised questions on the long-term viability of the new tour. Not to forget, LIV Golf is hosting its second event of the 2022 season this week in Portland at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Fred Couples lashes out at Phil Mickelson
Couples said, “I think this is a family thing for me. I’m a little peon from Seattle, but I know where the money’s coming from, and I think my family would disown me if I went. These guys — you’ve seen their interviews, right? Have you ever seen Phil look so stupid in his life? They know it’s a joke.”
He added. “I heard of all people Perez was a little confrontational. He’s a grain of sand in this Tour. He should be soft and kind, but he’s, like, raising his voice. I’m done with it.” They’re all saying they want to change golf, they’re doing it for the better of golf.”
Moreover, the 62-year-old professional’s words prove how he strongly disagrees with players joining the rival league. At the same time, it also depicts that the Lefty has not been open in his last two media interactions. One at the LIV Golf event in London and another one at the U.S. Open.
