The PGA Tour recently released the official schedule for season 2025, and well, this was not what the fans were expecting, to say the least. The new slate of tournaments brought some exciting changes, but also some notable surprises. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan hinted at the reasoning behind the changes, saying, “We’re bringing new perspectives onto our team to help realize the incredible opportunities ahead for our sport.”

With that in mind, it’s clear that the Tour is looking to shake things up and take the sport in a fresh direction so we’ve broken down four of the major changes you’ll see in next year’s schedule.

The Vegas scandal has to top the list and we all know why. After 41 consecutive years, the PGA Tour is abandoning Sin City but what is the reason? The shocking absence of a Las Vegas event on the 2025 fall schedule has sent shockwaves through the golf community and everyone is looking for the answer to the same question. Well, the reason is nothing more than the loss of Shriners’s title sponsorship after 17 years, which left the Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin without a financial backer. Golf superstars Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are already lamenting the decision, with Scheffler stating, “I think there’s always a place for Vegas in the game of golf,” and McIlroy adding, “It would seem like a miss for golf if we didn’t have a presence in Vegas,” as per Sports Illustrated. Despite the setback, the PGA Tour remains hopeful, with senior VP Joel Schuchmann expressing their intention to return to Las Vegas in the future.

2. The Wells Fargo Championship makeover

The second on the list is the Wells Fargo Championship makeover for more reasons than just one. We all know how in a stunning move, the Wells Fargo Championship which is a beloved PGA Tour event, is getting a major rebranding. After 13 incredible years, Wells Fargo is ending its partnership with the tour and the event will now be known as the Truist Championship. But what’s behind this change? It’s not just about a simple name swap, reportedly, Wells Fargo was hesitant to meet the increased purse demands which skyrocketed from $9 million in 2022 to a whopping $20 million for the 2024 season.

This development comes at a time when tournament sponsors are feeling the pinch after being asked to foot a bigger bill for purse responsibilities. It’s also coinciding with the latest news of Jon Rahm’s defection to LIV Golf, which could add another layer of complexity to the PGA Tour’s ongoing negotiations. One thing’s for sure, the golf landscape is shifting and we’re excited to see what’s next!

3. ZOZO Championship is replaced

The ZOZO Championship is a tournament that will always be remembered as the place where Tiger Woods scored his last win. It now is bidding farewell, and it’s the end of an era! This event was more than just a tournament, it was a milestone in Woods’ illustrious career, where he made history by tying Sam Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour titles, with a thrilling wire-to-wire victory in 2019. Woods’ impressive performance included a tournament-best 27 birdies, and he even held off a challenge from Hideki Matsuyama to claim the title. The ZOZO Championship will always be special to golf fans, especially those who witnessed Woods’ thrilling victory, and while it’s sad to see it go, the excitement is building for the new Baycurrent Classic, which will make its debut at Yokohama CC on December 30, and promises to bring fresh energy to the golfing world.

4. Key changes in majors

The 2025 PGA Tour schedule has some big changes, especially with the major tournaments. The Masters kicks off the major season in April, followed by the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in May. The U.S. Open takes place in June, with the Canadian Open serving as a lead-in event the week before instead. Finally, The Open wraps up the major season in July. To make room for the PGA Championship, the old Wells Fargo Championship, now sponsored by Truist, which is regularly held at Quail Hollow, is moving to Philadelphia Cricket Club in May. This is a big deal since the PGA Championship is such an important tournament. The PGA Tour has made sure the 2025 schedule is still exciting and challenging for players, and it will show off some of the world’s best golf courses.
