The arrival of LIV Golf has upset many golf legends since its initiation. Another PGA Tour veteran has recently shared his thoughts on the lucrative Tour. However, the golfing legend doesn’t hate the Saudi-funded Tour, instead, he has a problem with its defectors by labeling Phil Mickelson as a ‘nutbag’ and Sergio Garcia as a ‘clown’.
Though LIV Golf has signed some top names from its nemesis, six-time Major winner, Mickelson, still remains the most prominent. He has been the face of the breakaway Tour from the very beginning. While Phil had one of the best individual careers on the PGA Tour, Garcia’s Ryder Cup domination with Team Europe has also put him among the legends of LIV Golf.
Nonetheless, both men decided to start a new phase of their careers with the Saudi-funded Tour. However, they did not get the approval of the 1992 Masters winner, who had some unpleasant words for the defector duo.

Fred Couples unleashes on Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia
Though Couples may not be competing for the biggest cheque in the PGA Tour, he is currently preparing for the Champions Tour’s HOAG Classic. However, ahead of the event, the Hall of Famer sat down for an interview with The Orange County Register to share his thoughts on LIV Golf.

“I don’t have a problem with LIV”, said Fred Couples. While he may not have any issue with the lucrative Tour, it is the reason to leave the PGA Tour of the defectors that annoys the 65-year-old. He then aimed a shot at his long-time colleague by saying, “If you’re giving Phil Mickelson $200 million at age 52 to shoot 74 and 75, God bless you”.
Couples also referred to Mickelson as ‘Nutbag’ before claiming that he is “probably one of the 10 best players that ever played” and insisting he “still” likes Phil. However, after talking about the six-time Major winner, Fred then took a jibe at Sergio Garcia.
The 1992 Masters winner said, “All these other clowns, like Sergio (Garcia),” referring to the unpleasant words shared by the Spaniard about the PGA Tour officials before jumping to LIV Golf. While Fred Couples shared his thoughts about the Saudi-funded Tour, the golf world then shared their thoughts about the PGA Tour legend’s words.

Poor Fred, trying so hard to stay relevant. That tour he’s been a part of for 42 years just vindicated that nutbag Phil and remade itself in LIV’s image,

Phil was in my top 5. Money over Prestige took him out of my top 50. And Little Boy Garcia, ever since he spit in a cup,I rooted against him at the Masters
— MBailey The Em is Silent (@EmDBizzled) March 16, 2023
Though Couples may be the biggest fan of Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia’s reasons, he was still being honest about not having any hatred for LIV Golf. Perhaps it could be considered a positive outcome from his criticism.
