Probably one of the strongest partnerships in golf started in 1999. In February 1999, Steve was arriving in Doral for an event. He was the caddie of Raymond Floyd. While in the air in New Zealand, a news broke that Tiger had parted ways with his caddie, Michael Thomas Cowan, also known as, ” Fluff”. As a result, the search for a new caddie was on. Steve Williams speaks about how he felt that when Woods called him, it was a prank call.

Williams says, “The phone rings, and it’s pretty late, half-past nine. The gentleman on the other end of the phone says, ‘It’s Tiger Woods here. “And I had a mate who could take Tiger’s voice off to a tee, and I thought it was him, so I put the phone down.
