From the peaks to the plateaus. Is this how Dustin Johnson’s journey is going to be remembered? Back in 2017, he was ranked number one on the OWGR list, and he bagged the position for 64 straight weeks. It was the fifth-longest run in the no. 1 position. Given his last couple of years on the greens, one might question where has that dominance gone.
The last time he had won a major championship was at the Masters 2020, where he defeated Sungjae Im, and Cameron Smith by good five strokes. Despite participating in every other major since then, he has failed to grab any wins. This year too, he ended up missing the cut at both the Masters and the US Open halfway through the event and had finished at a T43 with a 6-under 278 at the PGA Championship. However, looks like the 4Aces GC Captain is fully fueled up right ahead of the final Major on the men’s circuit.
Dustin Johnson reached the Royal Troon for the practice round of the Open Championship on Wednesday. The official Instagram page of 4Aces GC, along with the official page of the breakaway league, recently took to their wall and shared one of his swings from the golf club in South Ayrshire, Scotland. They even wrote, “Playing in the elements @theopen”.

Although Dustin Johnson has been doing well at LIV Golf, winning the Open Championship will be an important milestone and help him shed the shadow that has been cast over him, especially due to his recent major outings.

Two years ago, Dustin Johnson was No. 3 on the Official World Golf Ranking. The two-time Major Champion had won twenty-four events on the PGA Tour. However, looking at his past thirteen appearances at majors, he has failed to grab a spot in the Top-5, which also includes five missed cuts in the same. Is he slowly fading away from the world of golf? Taking to this, one of them commented sarcastically, “Does he still play golf?” While another wrote, “Forgot he existed”.

Dustin Johnson became a part of LIV Golf in May 2022. Officially resigning from the PGA Tour in June at the time he even said, “I feel it is now time to put such speculation to rest. I am fully committed to the PGA Tour. I am grateful for the opportunity to play on the best tour in the world and for all it has provided me and my family.” Johnson was one of the prominent faces of the PGA Tour. So DJ, out of all the players signing the contract to play for the league, came as a rather shock to all his fans and the other players as well. Taking to this, one of them even wrote, “Dustin has been irrelevant since joining LIV”.
Earlier in May, when DJ missed the cut at the Augusta National, he dropped out of the Top 200 and was ranked 201 on the OWGR list. While one of the reasons might be the fact that joining LIV does not grant any OWGR points, there have been no signs of improvement for him in tournaments that can earn him the points. Although he won at LIV Golf Las Vegas, that has failed to grab any attention from his fans.

After the third major, Johnson is currently ranked at 392, and his performance in the majors hasn’t shown any signs of improvement. While one of them directly stated, “His game has gone downhill”. Another seemed to be worried about where his name would go if he failed to bring about his A-game. Another took a jab at the 4Aces GC Captain, as they commented, “Dustin needs to make a cut. He has missed every single major cut for like 5 years lol”.
With one last chance to grab some OWGR points and stand back on top this season, do you think DJ will be able to pace up and bridge the huge gap that he has created since joining LIV Golf? Let us know in the comments section below!
