LPGA Tour golfers bid adieu to the last major tournament of the thrilling season just last week. While many star players managed to display their skills with precision, American star Lexi Thompson, wasn’t one of them. She conceded 7 over par at the 2023 AIG Women’s Open which resulted in her fifth missed cut of the season.

Thus, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that 2023 has been a downhill battle for the golf icon. This raises concerns for the star who has time and again proved how exceptionally she can tame the greens. More so, these unsettling times point towards a major setback down the road. A costly setback that might greet Lexi Thompson if her plunge continues

Thompson has so far had a sporadic play in a disordered 2023. Despite a solid start to the season with a tie for third at the Saudi Ladies International, the 28-year-old has faced five missed cuts. However, that isn’t the surprising part of her career; rather the fact that she has only had eight starts on LPGA Tour this season.

Now, these numbers wouldn’t have been a matter of concern if not for the fact that the LPGA star faces a serious possibility of losing a full card, per Golf Channel. Currently, the Florida native ranks 157th in the Race to the CME Globe, which is the method to determine player status since 2021 on the LPGA Tour.

As a matter of fact, only the first 60 players make it to the year-end CME Group Tour Championship, which allows female athletes a mega chance to gather money. Additionally, the top 80 golfers have access to the full Tour cards, while the top 100 get to keep their cards with an opportunity to play in most of the LPGA Tour events.

Alas! This doesn’t appear to be the case for the American star who hasn’t won an LPGA tournament since 2019. Not only this, the golfer has only been able to make the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship among the major events in 2023. While it is disheartening to witness Thompson face such circumstances with her caliber, these things are far more common in the world of golf than one may assume.

This year itself Justin Thomas missed the FedEx Playoffs by a fluke. Similarly, Rickie Fowler also faced a missed post-season PGA Tour couple of years back. Hence, Lexi Thompson did not appear to be too bothered by the reports as she opened up about her optimistic outlook.

Looking at her recent performances, it is not surprising that LPGA star Lexi Thompson, is suffering from a dry spell on the greens. Yet, her attitude remains accurate in response to the same.

Rather than feeling all dejected, the golfer revealed to Golf Digest last week, “You shouldn’t read too much into that“. She indeed was referring to her gameplay and how things have been on the field. Adding further, she mentioned how she has just been focused on trying to enjoy her life and getting some me-time under her belt.

She, quite blatantly, reiterated, “This is my 13th year out here, so it’s my choice to play when I want, and when I don’t want to“. Talking about her injury and recovery, she said that her aim is to be fully ready to get back in the game and give herself proper healing time.

With her evident absence from the scene, Thompson has slipped from the 6th to the 21st World Ranking. Though, she still is there in contention for the Solheim Cup, currently holding the 7th position.
