Will TGL's expansion to Canada redefine golf's global appeal, or is it just another hype?

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy sure do know how to keep their fans on their toes. It’s been almost a year since the unfortunate accident that delayed TGL took place. And now, it seems that the brainchild of the two golfers will expand to Canada. That’s quite a journey we got there, to be honest. Amid all that, concerns surrounding the damaged SoFi center sure had reached new heights. But don’t worry now. For the tech-infused league, share a quick look at the building that had been damaged last year!

The innovative league, founded by the golfing duo in alliance with the PGA Tour, shared a post on its Instagram handle while teasing the start of the inaugural season of TGL, which is set to kick off next year. “84 sunsets until our first match: January 7 on @espn,” wrote the handle as it shared a picture of the renovated SoFi center in Florida.

A year ago, in 2023, TGL signed a deal with ESPN, following which it was named the “exclusive home of TGL presented by SoFi” in America. As a result, it was slated to be broadcast in prime time on EESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+ when it takes off in January 2025. “We believe ESPN is the right home for TGL and recognize the strategic benefits of Disney’s portfolio,” said Mike McCarley, the CEO of TMRW Sports and TGL, after the deal was done last year. “ESPN is often the first stop for sports fans, no matter the platform, and we are honored by ESPN’s view that TGL complements their current offering of major league sports.”

Coming back to the present, the new snap of the rebuilt center that Tiger Woods’s brainchild shared on social media sure is quite a bit of happy news. Especially since there had been no updates after the hurricane hit Florida and the tropical weather storm warning that was issued last week by the National Weather Service.

While ESPN gained media rights in the U.S., the same was up for grabs in Canada, that is, until recently, as per reports from Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal.

If you think that’s where the speculations end, then you’re sorely wrong. For there were also rumors surrounding the TGL discussing a possible introduction of a Canada-based team into the league. “An unnamed Toronto group was in the mix to own a team in the league’s inaugural year,” reported Carpenter as he alluded to January 2025. If the rumors do come out to be true, then that would mean more action for the golfing fans. Nothing short of exciting!
