An athlete enters a golf course expecting pristine fairways, well-trimmed greens, and a noise-free environment. Nobody expects non-humans to invade the courses. But sometimes, it’s easy to forget how these well-maintained spaces can be a habitat for many.

We have had instances of hyenas creeping up upon local golfers or swans chasing away a player. It was because the golfers were invading their homes. In another instance, some deadly aquatic fellows are creating a haunting situation at the Carbrook Golf Club near Brisbane, Australia.

Bull sharks surrounded by grassy hills

For almost two decades, approximately six bull sharks have lived in the lake near the 14th hole of the Carbrook Golf Club. Their fins poking through the water is a common sight for golfers. But the 2.4m-3m long sharks have not always lived there.

In 1996, the raging floods brought six man-eating sharks from a nearby river to the 51-acre lake on the Queensland golf course. Even though the flood water receded, the sharks remained. They found themselves stuck in the lake surrounded by grassy hills.

It’s been 17 years since their arrival at the Carbrook golf course. They survive on the stock of fish from the lake. The course staff also provides them with occasional treats.

In a piece published by The New York Times, a shark scientist and lecturer, Peter Gausmann, explained that bull sharks are adaptable enough to live indefinitely in low-salt water environments. It looks like these sharks will be here for a long while.

When the locals encountered sharks at the golf course

It is fairly easy to accept that sometimes animals appear on a golf course. With absolute greenery and people in smaller amounts, animals are bound to find their way to a fairway.

But sharks have a 0.01% chance of becoming a worry unless you are in Australia. Locals are used to seeing bizarre headlines as well as such sightings. One local admitted that their first encounter with a bull shark near the 14th hole was through other men.

They saw a couple of men feeding the shark when it rose from under the water. Before the shark, however, its jaws came out. And that’s not it. They have also bred and multiplied over time. Still, a local said it is alright if you are a spectator and do not get too close to them. Are you ever going to visit the 14th hole at the Carbrook Golf Course?
