Keegan Bradley finally outshines Phil Mickelson—Is this the start of a new era in golf?

Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark played their part in the first-day washout of the Internationals. In the fourth match of the Thursday Four-Ball, the pair won against Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Taylor Pendrith by one hole. It was a tense but scintillating performance from the Americans, especially Bradley, who came into the Presidents Cup after 10 years.

The last time he played in this tournament, he was paired with the legendary Phil Mickelson, who has since moved to LIV Golf. Speaking on this, Bradley said, “It’s just unbelievable. I told Wyndham walking up, I just missed it so much.” In the 2013 Presidents Cup, Mickelson and Bradley tore up the opposition and accomplished a record of 2-2-1. They faced off against the likes of Luis Oosthuizen, Jason Day, and Ernie Els. The only match they lost was on the first day against Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.

Bradley, now a veteran player and Ryder Cup captain, seems to be relishing his golf these days. Going through the majority of the year without a win, he ultimately found the winning touch at the BMW Championship, the qualifying event of the Fed Ex Cup. He also finished 13 in the Tour Championship the next week.

Now he’s playing with potential Ryder Cup team member Wyndham Clark, who also won a PGA Tour event this year. The two displayed a confident and resolute game where they got the lead on the first hole and didn’t lose it through 18 holes. Pendrith and Bezuidenhout tied the score at two holes on the back nine, but failed to press their advantage and take the lead.

With the form Keegan Bradley is in and his performance on Thursday, there is speculation about his becoming a playing captain in the Ryder Cup next year. He also said, “To be around the guys and see how into it they are and how much they love each other and just friends, it’s inspiring for me.”

When Keegan Bradley was picked as the Team USA captain for the Ryder Cup, people were very aware that he was someone who was still playing on the PGA Tour and trying to win against his team members. So, the question was asked whether he would be playing captain. He said then and has maintained that he would be playing if he qualified automatically on points. But if he didn’t, he would not be picking himself as a captain’s pick.

With him getting a taste of the action in the Presidents Cup, he might change his mind on picking himself. Another point in his favor for playing in the Ryder Cup is his performance on the day. Against strong competitors, Bradley and Clark made 8 birdies. Of course, he would also have to compete against LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau for his place in the Ryder Cup. However, we still have a year and some more of golf to come to that decision, especially with the talks between the leagues ongoing. The rules may drastically change by this time next year.
