Greg Norman is one of the most recognizable names in the golf industry. He was the world No.1 for 331 weeks. Moreover, he has achieved success from his business ventures off the course as well.

Norman wrote a book called ‘The Way of the Shark’ many years ago. In this book, he shared with the readers an incident that taught him a very important lesson.

Greg Norman learned an important lesson from his father

‘The great white shark’ reminisced about an incident from his childhood when he was unable to solve an algebra problem. “I remember one occasion when I was trying to solve an algebra homework problem and I just didn’t get it,” Norman said

He asked for help from his father. However, Norman’s father asked him to keep trying to work out the problem by himself rather than helping him. “When I asked my father for help, he said, ‘Keep working and you’ll figure it out’” he added.

Norman understood the lesson that his old man was trying to teach him to put in more effort. “Rather than helping me outright, I think my father was trying to get me to apply myself more.”

Today, the 2-time major winner has a net worth of $400 million. Despite retiring from golf in the 1990s, he remains an influential figure in the industry.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be wrong to assume that he did learn to apply more effort, which led to his success both on and off the course.

Norman’s mother introduced him to golf

The legend was once invited by his mother to play 9 with her. He even caddied for her in a tournament. Norman borrowed his mother’s club and practiced for a while after the tournament. That day, he hit many bad shots and even got the golf ball stuck in a tree. But he did not lose hope.

Over the years, he played many rounds of golf with his mother. Moreover, he even promised her one day that he would win the British Open and send her the trophy as a thank you for introducing him to golf.
