If you’re following the golf world, it’s likely that you’ve heard of Tiger Woods’s mother’s death two weeks ago. Kultida Woods, one of the biggest supporters of the GOAT, passed away on February 4. This came as a crushing blow to the legendary golfer who consequently withdrew from the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines. Although his fans missed his presence on the greens, the American golfer shared his grief by addressing the difficult process of coping with his mother’s loss; which will not let him play to the best of his abilities.

Since then, the fans have been wondering about a possible return of the legend on the course. Thankfully, the fans didn’t have to wait long. Yesterday, Tiger Woods returned to action in a TGL match at Palm Beach Gardens, where his team, Jupiter Links, played against New York Golf Club. Unfortunately, the day wasn’t successful as his team was beaten 10-3.

Despite the loss, Tiger seemed to enjoy the day, seemingly more relaxed than in his TGL debut three weeks ago. Regardless of how the day went for Tiger, many fans had taken notice of his presence. One of them happens to be Roger Steele, currently serving as the in-venue master of ceremonies for TGL.

In his latest Instagram story, Steele posted a clip of him at the venue, wearing a pin that said “For Tida,” pointing at Tiger Woods’s late mother Kultida. He attached the following caption to his story: “Don’t know if Big Cat needed to be out there today, but hoping he chose to compete to enjoy himself in light of all he’s been through lately. Def looked like he had fun being human today. #ForTida.” Certainly, fans have found this gesture sweet and heart-warming in the wake of the current situation. This also definitely confirms that Tiger is in a better state of mind, while grief has no specific time, it is good to watch the GOAT lighten up a little and enjoy playing his sport.

While Tiger seemed to be in fun spirits on the greens, outside it he did reflect on his latest loss. “I had a hard time driving down here,” he said, talking about partaking in this TGL match. “I had a really hard time getting here and then reliving all the moments that we’ve had, my mom, how excited she was to have Charlie drive her here. So those are some great moments and great memories.” Thankfully, the fans have been understanding of the situation. We, too, support the Woods family during this difficult time.

But, that’s what’s going on-course. What about things off course?

Tiger Woods’s TGL may expand in the future

While the day was interesting for the golf legend, it’s likely that he will not return to the greens for a while. When asked whether he will be present for the upcoming Cognizant Classic next week, Tiger said, “I really haven’t thought about golf, so I don’t think I’m going to be thinking about it for just a little bit here.” If that has to happen, fans will certainly miss Tiger Woods on the course.

However, the current state of TGL seems to be going well. On the viewership standpoint, the league has certainly shattered viewership expectations, averaging 810,000 viewers for its inaugural five matches on ESPN. Tiger’s debut in Week 2 drew in a whopping 1 million viewers, setting the tone for a thrilling season. With a 23% audience gain over last year’s college hoops broadcasts, which were broadcast in the same slot as TGL. TGL is proving it’s here to stay. An astonishing 11.3 million viewers have tuned in so far. We are certain more is to come. This news has pleased both ESPN and TGL.

It goes in the same breath as Tiger’s plans for TGL’s expansion. Tiger Woods dropped a major hint about the future of TGL during an interview on February 18. “Well, hopefully, next year we can expand on what we’ve done this year. We’ve learned a lot, and I think that we’ve brought a great product to the game of golf, and spreading the game in a different way.” That bears as good news for many golf fans, including Tiger Woods, who will be looking to see the star golfer more in the upcoming months.
